NextRadio is an application that allows users to access FM radio over the phone. While I have previously touched on commercial radio applications, this one in particular is an interactive app that deals directly with terrestrial radio.  It allows users to purchase songs and concert tickets, interacting with stations like never before.

The interaction and information allow for a more personal experience previously unavailable from larger stations. While users can’t manually selected what songs to hear, this app democratizes traditional radio in new ways, evolving this ever changing medium.

Lyricists will be out of a job soon. Well, probably not but still this technology is worth noting. AI can generate poetic content, this will almost certainly be applied to other AI creative content generators such as the one that creates original compositions.

It still remains to be seen how actual audiences react to such content, but in an era of recycled pop stars, it is quite possible these generators are capable of creating “hits.”  It is a strange phenomena that could lead to some interesting developments down the line. Who will receive profits of songs generated by AI content? How will they be credited? Will they win a grammy? Certainly worth keeping an eye out.

Earlier I talked about radio stations recording video of their on-air shows in order to bolster audience outreach. It only makes sense that stations like Hot 97 would take it one step further and start producing unique video content for the web. They have and established infrastructure and audience that will interact with their new web content.

The artist documentary is perfect segue for radio stations to move into producing more unique content. Here, the station profiles rising Harlem rapper Dave East, getting a more intimate look at his life and process they would be unable to capture from a simple radio interview. Artists, fans and radio heads should all rejoice as new platforms open up from content creators, this can only breed opportunity.

Ride along with Tate Kobang, the king of Baltimore, as he reveals the sites, sounds, legends, and landmarks that have shaped his evolving musical style.

So granted, Boiler Room is marketed as TV. Really though, it is a multi-platform channel that spotlights underground artists from all over the world. From music podcasts, to in depth documentaries, Boiler Room serves as a new face and expression in the broader idea of “radio.”

As mainstream radio becomes synonymous with the same 40 songs from the same 40 artists , Boiler Room serves the other end, they break new artists and give them a platform. Whether it be through live shows or interviews the channel shed’s light on the new wave of musicians coming up. Artists like Anderson .Paak, who’s quickly becoming a household name got his start working with Boiler Room in smaller venues and channels. 

Consider Boiler Room a proving ground for artists on the rise. They take risks and diversify their content in ways mainstream media is unable to replicate. It’s a new platform for a new generation, one that yearns for multiple outlets and means of expression.
