Skilled hands had been busy butchering a boar carcass in the shed when the earth groaned like a tree in a merciless wind; they stilled as their owner paused in her work, senses keen and listening, muscles tensing in preparation for a fight. Rising to her feet, she exited the small shed next to her cabin, the wind from the oncoming storm whipping her clothes.
However, the clouds gathering in the night sky had nothing to do with the bright blue bolt of lightning which split the air not far from her cabin; her nerves bristled, her body feeling the magic which birthed the lightning and became concerned.
Quickly, she retrieved her weapons, mounting up on her horse and galloping over to investigate where the lightning had struck. Breathing heavily, misting the frigid air, she fought back the fear which struck her heart—the magical surge she had felt was all too familiar, and the danger it presented.
A body lay upon the cold, hard ground when she arrived, halting her spotted stallion on a slightly elevated rocky patch; this person didn’t smell like the world she knew, didn’t smell of pine and fire and frost.
As the body began to stir slightly, she reflexively drew her bow, pointing it at the stranger and waiting to see what they would do. Her white wolfish battle hound approached cautiously, circling the fair-haired newcomer, body tense, hackles raised, but not growling.
