Episode 003: Feng Shui for Your Desk
HOLISTIC SPACES PODCAST, EPISODE 003
Hello again from the Holistic Spaces podcast! This week, we’ll talk about feng shui for your desk. The back to school season is in full-swing, and chances are, work is picking back up too. How can you make adjustments to your workspace to maximize the energy of your day?
Each season in feng shui corresponds to one of the five elements, and autumn’s element is metal. Since metal relates to the Completion area of the bagua map, the fall season is all about getting things done and focusing, which often manifests in your career.
What does your desk represent?
Your desk represents your career, your work and your path in life, as well as how you relate to and reach out to others. Think of how many people you interact with and relate to on a daily basis as you work.
Desk location and positioning
As we’ve talked about before, the most important concept of desk location is the commanding position. The desk where you most often work should always be in the commanding position, so that you are able to see the door, but not directly in line with it. If this isn’t possible, you can use a mirror as an adjustment.
For your desk, it’s also important to ensure that you don’t face a wall, and if so, you can adjust this positioning as well. As with the commanding position, you can use a convex mirror as a correction, or you can add inspirational images or image with depth.
Creating a space of focus at your desk is just as essential as ensuring that you are in the best position. One way to create focus is to attach a mirror, 3 inches in diameter, to the ceiling above your desk. This helps to channel and focus your energy as you work.
Finally, you can make adjustments to your desk using the feng shui bagua map. As we covered in our second episode, the bagua map is a 3x3 grid used to make energy adjustments in certain areas. The most important areas of this grid, in terms of your career, are the top three areas: Abundance and Wealth, Recognition and Relationships.
One great indicator of your career or schoolwork is where clutter is located on your desk. Clutter in any of these three guas can symbolize a feeling of “stuckness” in those areas of your life, so clearing this clutter can open up new channels or opportunities.
Once your desk is free of clutter, you can make feng shui adjustments to activate each of these bag areas.
Abundance - For improvement in the abundance or wealth areas of your desk, and therefore life, try adding a natural citrine crystal. This quality crystal helps attract abundance and prosperity in many ways.
Recognition - For help at work or with being seen, make adjustments in this gua. One great way is by adding a plant here. You could also try adding a mandala with fiery colors to this area, as red symbolizes passion and reputation.
Relationships - Relationships are important for your career, no matter what you do. We may have any number of relationships, from coworkers to mentors to employees and more. To cultivate gentleness, nourishment, support and compassion in your various relationships, add rose quartz to this area. If you’d like, you could also add a weighty Quan Yin statue to represent compassion, as well as the Earth element.
You most likely spend a lot of time at your desk and on your career, so why not make sure you’re inviting abundance, focus and healthy relationships into your work? Take a look at your desk now. Is it positioned for positive energy? Can you add focus or make any other adjustments?
