Welcome to the Revolution!
At July 30, 2016 Saturday, DLSU’s famous organization TeamComm hosted the second Communication Conference that happened inside DLSU itself. Vouchers were a bit expensive but at the end of the day, the money paid was very worth it.
There were exactly 5 Plenary Speakers- each of them inspiring and important in the field of communication. The order of speakers are as follows: Maria Ressa, Ellen Ongkeko Marfil, John Nery, David Guerrero, and last but not the least, JR dela Cerna.
Maria Ressa, the CEO of the very famous social news network, Rappler, mostly concentrated on the evolution of digital media. “Its my 30th year as a journalist. Back then, the fax was magical, now I have two cellphones.” ” said Maria Ressa, “What used to need 20 years to get a billion dollars- snapchat only took two years.”
Technology is growing too fast- even if we don’t want it to. The best we can do is to adapt to the times and try to advance as fast as technology is.
Ellen Marfil, the independent filmmaker concentrated on the importance of a community. “I am not in the field to compete, I am just looking for a community that has the same artistic interests as me.”
Marfil then emphasizes how lucky our generation is for having social media. the hardest we have it is building a community who will be able to be there with us through our journey in the field. “Start Doing.” she says.

The next speaker, John Nery, chief editor of the very influential the Inquirer, talks about 5 different things but one stands out- “No Story is worth a life.” Nery tells us about needing to balance the need to publish the truth and the security of the lives of the journalists. There will always be a story, good and bad, just make sure it doesn’t harm you because I repeat, “No STORY is worth a life.”
The next speaker, Mr. David Guerrero, the chief creative officer of BBDO, share his insights on future advertising. “You’re first client is yourself, you need to work out how to get noticed.” He also then shows us an ad video that shows us a good example on how to advertise. It was a video that tells us a story that included the product- not just the sale of a product. “Learn the rules before you break them [...] get to know what’s been done and decide where to work from that.”
Lastly, we had a UP graduate, Mr. JR dela Cerna, head of social media division in ABS-CBN. “Social Media is a reflection of what’s happening outside.” he explains. “We are part of a global movement/trend.” According to Dela Cerna, we are the reason that the things shared around social media gets shaken up. We understand things differently, therefore we say it differently, and the story is altered from what we once heard.
When asked for advice for aspiring communication people, Dela Cerna stated that his best advice would be to “Stay on social.” this is actually a really good advice now because it is where the world is, and where the world will be for a long time. “Truly understand your audience first.”
There were a lot of things discussed and all in all, it was an eventful day. So much knowledge has been implanted in my mind and I would definitely come back to a third commcon next year.
