I’d heard good (not great) things about the film but the book certainly wouldn’t make me want to search it out.

Really nice review :) I didn’t hate Warm Bodies as much as you did, but I certainly don’t get why it was praised. I read it in pretty much one sitting (train journey) so maybe that helped my reading. If it had been spread out a little more then I think I would have had more problems with it.

I loved the book when I read it, and the film is pretty awesome too. It manages to really create that atmosphere of familiar but oh-so-strange you mention with regard to the book. I think black cats are probably regarded as the quintessential witch’s cat, so in a way it fitted to have the cat be black, and yet flipping that cliche he helped rather than worked with the “witch”.

I'd agree that the starting is the strongest part of the book, but I really enjoyed the whole story within a story part of it. And I thought that Seth was a great character.

The only Morrison I've read is Beloved. It is utterly awesome and terrific, in that it is awe-inspiring and full of terror :) But yes, I must read more.

I haven't read any Kate Elliott in waaaayyy too long, I don't think I've read any of her books since I started my blog *goes to check* Actually I read a book of hers in 2006 but I didn't reread the previous books in the series and didn't love it because I couldn't remember what had gone on. So I guess it is more than time to add her to Mount TBR, I always meant to pick up the Jaran books but that was when I was limited to visiting the library for books and they never had what I was looking for.

I haven't read The Witches in years but this year I did reread The BFG and loved it, so I might pick The Witches up as well. My favourite Roald Dahl book was always Danny Champion of the World, I almost don't want to revisit that because I have such fond memories of it.

Great post, I'd never really linked the "life hacks" with helpful hints before but it so true. I remember the "women's magazines" used to always have a few letters dedicated to how to do things better or quicker. Same difference.
