Fun-ish Fact: in late 2006, Mattel released a console made of anti-consumerism and sadness. The HyperScan was a very low-budget console with an RFID device that would be used to read the strips in their Trading Cards and allow them to interact with their associated game disc. The cards don't actually contain any content because, well, they're bloody RFID cards and have next to no storage capacity. All that's stored on them is an unlock code for content that's already on the disc and a very small amount of save data.
To summarise: kids would buy packs of Trading Cards, the content of which being random, and said cards could then be used to unlock content they already owned. The minimum cost for collecting all the available cards for any given game far exceeded the cost of the console itself. The whole thing was basically an ugly loot box.
Even better - because the console had such a short lifespan (around 14 months), none of the games (that's all 5 of them) ever saw the full release of their card sets, so some content still can't be unlocked. Not like it matters too much, as with it being the third worst-selling console of all time, next to no-one bought it.
