NOUN – The Naming Words

What are nouns ?

In English grammar, noun is one of the “parts of speech”. It can be defined as the word used to name a person, place or thing. Thus it is also called as “naming word”.

For example:

Varun plays tennis.

It is a beautiful bouquet of roses.

The words in bold letters are nouns.

Noun has both singular & plural forms. In Plural form the noun ends with s, es, ies, and ves.

For example: The plural of book is books, watch is watches, lady is ladies, wife is wives,

Some nouns change their spelling in plural form.

For example: The plural of woman is women, man is men, foot is feet and tooth is teeth.

There are few nouns that do not change in their plural form.

For example: The plural of sheep is sheep, food is food and music is music.

There are four types of nouns which are commonly used

1.      Common Noun:   It is the name given, in common, to a group of persons, places or things. For example:  Country, Planet, Town, Man, Woman, Dog, Cat etc.

  2.      Proper Noun: It is the name of a particular person, place or thing. It always begins with capital letter.

For example: Sophia, Ravi, Book, Pen, Sydney, Delhi etc.

  3.      Collective Noun: It is the name given to a group of persons, places or things.

For example: a bunch of keys, a team of players etc.

  4.      Abstract Noun: It is the name of a quality, action or state of a noun.

For example: The bold letters in following sentences are abstract noun.

·         Rohan is a very kind hearted boy.

·         The childhood is a golden period of our lives.

Day 2: Interactive Notebooks/L.A. Journals

We made an eight-tab shutter foldable today to start out parts of speech. We glued the foldable into our ISNs, labeled the top of the page, and added it to the table of contents. I didn't take a photo of the sides of the tabs, but I had them write the definition of a common noun on the side of the left tab and the definition of a proper noun on the right side, as well as examples, from a powerpoint. 

Next, each student was given a page from a magazine. They had to cut out a picture of a common noun and a picture of a proper noun and label it correctly. Pretty basic, but a review was definitely needed.

For my inclusion students, who struggle with foldables, we just drew a line down the middle of the paper and did it this way.

Last, since my standard says identify the proper use of common and proper nouns, we practiced with whiteboards a worksheet from super teachers, which requires a $20/yr membership fee. 

Great engagement from the students. They enjoyed the cutting and pasting and using whiteboards is always a huge kick. Don't have whiteboards? Don't forget you can laminate cardstock for a cheap alternative to personal whiteboards. This pack has turned out to be a perfect size for quick assessment. 

And that's all I'm doing with common and proper nouns. They had a good grasp of it and it's a small, small percentage of TCAP. If at all.
