'SOUTH Holland District Council has been praised for acting quickly to safeguard Long Sutton´s chances of winning the Calor Gas Best Kept Small Town competition. With judges due to turn up any day for a final look, the towns hopes of honours could have been jeopardised by a dumped car.A gold-coloured Vauxhall Cavalier was discovered lying half-submerged in Common Pit from about 8pm on Sunday. But within just a few hours of the Spalding Guardian notifying the district council on Tuesday the car had been hauled out.Dennis Tennant, a member of the towns entry committee, said: "It was looking like being very disappointing. Were in the finals, about to be judged by the end of the month and then this happened."Instead of the judges seeing a nice pit with ducks, they were going to see half a car sticking out. But three pats on the back for the district council. After a very short time the car has been recovered, which is marvellous news."The pit is next to The Old Ship Inn on London Road and, although the car appears to have been driven in during daylight, no witnesses have come forward.Mr Tennant said: "Thats the strangest thing. It didnt look like an accident."
