Postcards final photos

Week 7

I took some photos for my process book, but these show what they properly look like. I actually love them, I could see them in a shop window in Southwold. It is one of my favourite things I have made so far this year, I think it is because the place means a lot to me, so I have that connection to them as well.

Communicating in Colour

Finally came in today to present the finished postcards. For my belly band, I just did a quick cutout of a sun to mimic the symbol in the Philippine flag.

To conclude, these are the explanations behind each postcard.

My overarching colour theme was the triadic theme already provided by my flag; red, yellow, and blue. Officially, each of the colours of the Philippine flag represent something such as blue for peace, red for patriotism and bravery. But for my postcards, I linked each of the colours to my own experiences of the Philippines as my hometown.

Yellow, PH: This card simply shows my home country as a whole. A joyful yellow to mirror the brightness of my country and its people.

Red, Carabao: 'Carabao' is the name of the mango variety that I like the most - it's the world's sweetest mango, and a fruit I miss dearly.

Blue/green, Laguna: Green isn't part of the flag colours, but I wanted to include a nod to the flora of my country. Laguna is home to Mount Makiling, a dormant volcano covered in rich biodiversity. This same mountain is where my old arts school is situated, where I studied for a year.

Blue, Manila (MNL): This card features a memory of late night drives through the city; surrounded by brake lights and the stretch of buildings above as we crawl through the traffic of the capital.

Riso for Communicating in Colour

Week 6

I made my riso prints with Jordy's help, just need them to dry and cut them out. I did my bellyband by using ink to write out Southwold to match the handwritten font on the postcards themselves. So far they look great, I can't wait to see the finished products though!

The images aren't as detailed as they were on my computer, I did change the levels to make the huts and beach one more clear, which helped.

Riso Printing for Communicating in Colour

Week 6

Riso Printing would be perfect for my photos, this way I can use blue and pink more obviously and makes the postcards more interesting, without using illustration. I set up the pages I needed - black and white separate layers. I want the text blue and images pink as it will show up better in these colours.

I printed out all my photos and picked out my favourite four. I tried a photo with colour bars on to show how much of each was used but it did not look right.

I tried out a gold colour first, but didn't work, I also did not love the first font, it wasn't very personal.

The handwritten font is so much better fitting for the aesthetic of my postcards, and blue instead of gold works well as blue represents a lot of feelings in Southwold.

Placement wise bottom right is the best, it doesn't take up much of the photo but is clear.

This is an artist who does seaside postcards/posters. I like the character they have in them, you can see the memories within, and the colours pop so well. Most of her work is based around Devon and Dorset but the tone is what I am most interested in - warm, fun, reminiscent.

Colour Project Research

Week 6

This is my research for the communicating in colour project. I thought about where I feel most at home and that is probably on my family holiday to Southwold in Suffolk. It is such a calm and peaceful town where I feel most relaxed. I also love the sea (which is why I came to Bournemouth) and go on runs or read there. I already have a lot of photos from Southwold so all I need to do is decide which colours to use most of and how to present how feel when I'm there.

This Postcard is of Bournemouth, but I love the handwriting at the back, it is what I love about postcards, they are so personal and something you can keep for a long time for a reminder of place of person.

I also looked at some Southwold postcards which are colourful and fun, however, illustration isn't my strong suit so I would need to think of something else to have as much colour.

I then looked at colours and which ones I wanted to use, I like the idea behind pink and blue - childhood, happiness, things of the heart, trust, calmness, security.
