I’ve been studying the work of the late great master Jean-Michel Basquiat. This is what I’ve learned so far. Mindfulness and trust are the key ingredients. It takes perfect concentration to allow flow state and stay grounded. Art student forevermore... The community gallery space is designed for non-profits and community groups that are interested in exploring issues through visual art. We are interested in collaborations that bridge diverse groups within the Edmonton region, introducing members of the city’s visual arts communities to other groups and vice versa
Check out the details as posted on the website and be sure to get your application in before August 30.
We’ve wanted to clarify our processes and reposition the community space, and part of that is that we want a new process for figuring out our relationships to community groups we partner with. Under the new model, we aim to select 10 projects each year where we can give our space and support to a community group at no cost.
We’re hoping that our new process will open the doors to community organizations with good ideas but who perhaps haven’t had the chance to make an exhibition before, especially not in a professional gallery context. In part, this is informed by our experiences with the Community Gallery over the last several years—we’ve been able to partner with some great new organizations—watching a group like Kids4Cameras establish themselves, or responding to a grassroots initiative like the Land of Love Persian art projects—as well as hosting installments in long-running series like 5 Artists 1 Love.
A part of this is also figuring out what we are able to support directly. We’ve been running the Community Gallery on the basis that cost should not be an obstacle—although we don’t have funding to run it ourselves we’ve been able to be flexible with arrangements for different community groups. Now, we’re starting to move to a model where a peer committee will help us to identify where we can put that support. We’ll be looking to prioritize projects involving professional artists and fair compensation. In the future, we hope that we’ll be able to expand this even further, perhaps directly supporting the compensation of artists who work with community groups to realize projects.
We are also currently seeking additional members, with experience in community arts programming, for our peer advisory committee. If you want to get involved, contact Adam at [email protected].
