First Community Visit
On this week, we met on a Monday due to the service learning activity scheduled. We were headed to Paco, Manila where our designated organization/community was based. As we arrived in our destination, I realized that it was in a place I pass by on the way to school and going back home. I never imagined that place to look like that. We first passed by the Paco Market itself, and we were guided near the River. It surprised me how much trash was thrown to the river and how it affected the river. At some point, you could see that the water was somehow solidified and the trash is just all piled up. We walked and eventually ended up in the barangay where we were oriented more about the community. I was mostly interested to know more about the river and from where it all flows. The “River Warriors” were discussed and introduced to us, who continuously take the time and effort to bring the river into a better state. They have done as much as to walk in the river to clean it. They gained so much of my respect. After the orientation, groups were then asked to come up with a project we would want to implement to the community. My group was assigned to come up with a livelihood for the community to have with the use of recycled materials.
I was really looking forward to this immersion. I like being involved in communities where I am able to help and contribute to them, even in a simple way. I am excited to implement my group’s project as I know this will benefit them and it could be something they could really do.
From this immersion experience, I realized that small acts can go a long way. By simply throwing your trash in the proper places, it could already make a difference. It’s the little things that we can do in order to make the lives of others better.
If we could do the project again, what would we do differently?
If we are able to do this community visit again, we would bring the children on a field trip to Kuala Lumpur so that they can learn valuable knowledge and expose themselves to the outside world. Finally, we would organize competitions such as singing and dancing competitions in addition to outdoor game tournaments so that the children can showcase their talents.
What information can we share with our peers or the community?
The information that we would like to share is that the community should instill the habit of volunteerism. Volunteerism is about volunteering ourselves to help the needy, understanding their living conditions and the difficulties they faced. Most importantly, statuses or races does not matter when volunteering because they are also humans like us. Finally, we should come forward to volunteer ourselves to help the people in need so that they can also live a better life.
What would we like to learn more about, related to this project or issue?
After doing this project, one of the things that we are interested in learning more about is what we could personally do as individuals and also in groups to solve the issues addressed, instead of just letting the bystander effect take place. Moreover, we would like to find out more about the lives and difficulties faced by the children in order to get a deeper understanding of the issues. Lastly, we are also curious in what other ways that we are able to help the children to further bring more positive change in their lives.
