Japan. Where even the rail passes are personified into good looking anime guys
Part 2.1: Student Commuter Pass
I'm cutting what was going to be one post into little snippet posts because it flows better that way. In Japan nearly everyone uses the train and subway system to get to work or go anywhere of interest. Of course, it would follow that there are rechargeable cards you can buy for this so you don’t have to keep buying tickets. The two major cards in the Greater Tokyo area are the Suica card and the PASMO card. Suica is used for lines owned by the JR East corporation and PASMO is for basically every other railway, bus, and subway owned by private companies.
For student’s there’s this handy thing called a Student Commuter Pass. It’s a discounted card that allows unlimited travel between two stations of your choice-- the station near home and the one near campus. I can stop and get on at any station within that route and still be covered by the card. Keio had a useful paper that explained which card to get (depending on where you lived in relation to Keio) and how to fill out the application form. My choice was the PASMO card because I live along the Tokyu-owned lines.
The price varies depending on the length of time you choose for the card: 1 month, 3 months, or 6 months. I chose 6 months because I’m here for a year, so the price came out to 40040円 (including 500 yen deposit) which is about $400.40. It sounds expensive, but some quick math shows that this is a steal. It costs 400円 for a one way trip from Hiyoshi station to Mita station. 800 for round trip, 30 times a month (ignoring weekends), and that’s 24000 = $240.
The card is issued at the same time you turn in the application and pay the fee, and can be used right away. Next snippet: The second orientation and explorations in Tokyo.
OH MY GOD I JUST REALIZED I CAN USE BOTH OF MY COMMUTER PASSES TODAY AND I DON'T HAVE TO PAY OVER $26 A DAY FOR TRAINS ASLKDASLKDJALSKDJLKSADJLKSAJDLKSAJDLAKSDASD *・゜゚・*:.。..。.:*・’(*゚▽゚*)’・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・*

had to buy a new commuter pass today. i know it`s good for three months and i know that it gives me a discount because i`m a full-time student, but it still hurts to fork over ¥19,470. yowza.
