Since the markers for very low spectrum/high functioning autism are very similar to those of dissociation is it possible for someone to be diagnosed with autism at an earlier age because no one thought to check if they have dissociative behaviors?
That would be possible, yes. Dissociation is kind of an odd symptom, so a lot of mental and physical health issues can get confused with it. It’s also very possible (and even likely) to have both autism and dissociation as a symptom. Dissociation very often tied to trauma though whereas autism isn’t. They should have enough distinctions for you to be able to be able to figure out what you have.
