I got accepted as an intern in natural language processing research project. They said I got it because of my interest in linguistics and some text processing skills. Woohoo!

I told a friend a few days ago that quite a few linguists work in tech, and they were surprised and asked what exactly they did there. I had a general idea but went on Twitter to gather more information, and here’s what I came up with.

A helpful #linguistics jobs post on Tal Linzen’s blog about linguists working in tech. A few examples: 

I work with a bunch of “Analytical Linguists”: they project-manage, design and run experiments/annotation tasks, do error analyses, create phoneme/phonotactic inventories and morphonological specs, and write & test finite-state grammars. (Anonymous)

I have, for various employers, created linguistic complexity metrics, analyzed syntactic parser output, developed and utilized semantic annotation schemes, created NLP training data, reviewed automated metaphor tools, architected NLP solutions. (@lousylinguist)

My partner is in charge of creating linguistic resources and is in charge of the level support to help pp disambiguate their search queries in a specialized search engine. Every too wide queries costs many $$$$ to her company. (@zehavoc)

so I’m reading my inro to linguistics textbook and the intro talks about how there will never be a universal translator. considering my interest in computational linguistics and ai, I’m really interested in seeing why that’s the case.

Google Translate is launching gender-specific translations: masculine and feminine results for a gender-neutral query.

It pleases my feminist element as well as the one that cannot make a feminine form in French.

All weekend long, my starfriend and I were working on a flashcard application. It contains few Python scripts I had to “code and make usage of” as an assignment for Natural Language Processing class.

Comp Ling in Italy?

this is a long shot, but i was wondering if anyone knows of italian universities which offer computational linguistics courses?

i want to do an erasmus in italy but i can’t decide on a place because none seem to have everything i want OR specifically a comp ling program.

so any italian computational linguists here who can offer some insight?
