I'm currently (finally) reading Gillian Hutchinson's book on the Franklin Expedition, and I think the biggest surprise so far has been finding out that Erebus and Terror were approximately the same length and beam as Pride of Baltimore II, the schooner I sailed up the East Coast of the USA on this summer.*

Pride sails with a crew of 18 (guest + professional crew combined). Erebus and Terror carried a combined total of 129 men on their fatal final voyage.

...is now an appropriate time to say "I know it smelled crazy in there"?

*Erebus and Terror each had an orlop deck/hold, which Pride doesn't, but since Pride had lots of storage space under the sole boards, I think the main difference there is that the engines wouldn't have taken up part of the deck people were living on.

Nirvana vs Alice in Chains

I see lots of comments saying: “Alice in Chains is way better than Nirvana. They deserve more recognition”. Well I’m gonna talk about these two bands. Nirvana was influenced basically by Mudhoney and The Melvins, among others. These bands were simple, they didn’t need awesome riffs to be great bands. So Nirvana did. Being simple doesn’t mean you are bad in composing. That’s the essence of these bands.

On the other hand Alice in Chains had its pillars in heavy riffs cocktailed with grunge. Considering Layne had a heavy metal band in the 80s, it’s not strange this influence. Their structure and change of rythms makes them unique. Their songs evolve and are difficult.

Both bands are great, it’s true that Nirvana was more famous, but Kurt promoted bands that weren’t too known so people listened to them. I think they can’t compare them. It’s true they are both grunge, but they are too different, and that makes them so awesome.
