Watch out for your compass!
Apparently the North Magnetic Pole is moving rather fast. It has been moving at about 35 miles per year. It is has been in the Canadian Arctic, but is trending towards Siberia lately. In certain places the difference between true north and magnetic north is significantly different than it was. Maps need to be adjusted.
In the age of GPS navigation that may not appear a big deal. Ships and planes continue to use compasses as they are reliable and simple. That means less prone to failure.
There are two aspects to this phenomenon. First is the compass thing. Second is the possible end of life on earth as we know it. Interested yet?
Our planet has a liquid core of hot molten metal. That swirls and mixes about and creates the magnetic field around the earth.
Right now the magnetic field runs up and down. It protects earth from some quite nasty radiation. Every so often the earth’s core gets twisted around differently and the poles flip. North becomes south and visa versa. It has happened many times before over millions of years. It has flipped in as short a time as 100,000 years and as long as 50 million years. The last time was about 780,000 years ago. Traces of these flips are found in rocks deposited over time.
When it flips it happens fast. It may take only a thousand years. While this is happening birds and fish that use magnetic navigation for migration will get lost. If the pole points directly at the sun there will could be a funneling of radiation down from space. It might be bad.
It may not be too bad. We really do not know. But compasses will be useless for a while. Satellites are effected and my be pushed in dangerous ways maybe out of the sky which means GPS may cease to function.
Of course this may only effect our great-great-great......grandchildren. If society can work together we will get through it OK. See how well we are doing with Climate Change? It will be fine.
