Greene Square, Savannah Georgia by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: One of my favorite places in all of the South to go visit is Savannah, GA. With each trip, I find myself concentrating more and more on the presence of those gorgeous live oaks so carefully preserved throughout it's downtown area. One afternoon while Lauren was paying a visit to the Blick Art Materials, I took the 8x10 for an exploratory visit downtown. Every few blocks, there's a new square with it's own personality and stunning live oaks. Greene square had a lesser concentration of live oaks than some others, so a slightly longer focal length and closer working distance was needed to convey the same feeling. During this long exposure, there were a number of Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) students taken by the big camera. One young lady was curious enough to ask what it looked like. Once this exposure was done, I gave her a peak under the dark cloth. Snowy Afternoon, Cedar Falls Trail by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: If this is the first time you're seeing this area of Ohio in the winter, stop what you're doing and plan a trip to Hocking Hills. Seriously, just go do it. The trails are amazing, there's almost no weather situation that makes the experience any less magical, and even if you aren't a photographer, there's something there for you. Unless, of course, you're a fan of cell phone signals; this is the place where those go to die, and it's just you and mother nature. Today's scene is yet another from Cedar Falls trail when snow has dusted the ground, and the late afternoon sun is shining through the flurries in an amazing display. Early Afternoon, Rock House by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: While a very fun location to hike almost any time of year, Rock House is by far the trickiest to photograph. The large rock formations are set back far enough that even in the most subdued light can pose a challenge of extreme contrast range. That leaves a film photographer with few choices as to what type of film developer they'll use to represent the scene. The easy way out would be to let the background blow out and take more detail in the rock. Or maybe even bracket and *gasp* stitch together an HDR in post. When applicable, I try to never do either. This shot is yet another in a long line of examples why I love Pyrocat HD. Bank at Lower Falls, Old Man's Cave by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: Every time I load up some Ilford FP4+ to go shoot down at Hocking, I'm always pleasantly surprised with what I take home. My most recent trips to Old Man's Cave were no different. Easily the least loved portion of Old Man's Cave trail is the Lower Falls as it drains and meanders downstream to connect with the Cedar Falls trail. This particular morning following three consecutive days of rain finally did the area some justice. Around the Bend, Broken Rock Falls by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: When revisiting a location that is small and difficult to maneuver, finding a fresh perspective can be very challenging. One such visit presented itself earlier this past Spring, as I toured my photographer friend Mark Fohl through the Cedar Falls trail of Hocking Hills. Broken Rock falls has a very distinctive, yet small, waterfall that's hard to work around due to its location. Late Morning Light, Cedar Falls Trail by Mat Marrash Via Flickr: Some mornings hiking the trails at Hocking Hills are more successful than others. The mornings with the highest success rate for me always start with some unpleasant rain, and finish with a stream or two of that late morning sunlight.
