Vincent Price - The Brainwashing of John Hayes (1955)
Here's an example of the original "Add to Cart" button: a mechanical wheel that requires ten seconds of physical labor and a prayer to the copper-wire gods. In 1961, shopping at 3 A.M. wasn't a blurry-eyed scroll through a smartphone; it was a formal engagement with a heavy plastic brick and a "catalog sales office" employee who was likely reconsidering their life choices. The ad even suggests the Sears catalog was a more effective piece of American propaganda than the phonograph. Move over, democracy, we’re conquering the Cold War one polyester blend at a time.

I don't have any idea of who or what God is. But I do believe in some great spiritual power. I feel it particularly when I'm out in nature. It's just something that's bigger and stronger than what I am or what anybody is. I feel it. And it's enough for me.
