Computer Woes
Confession: I am apparently hell on desktop computers.
For at least six months, my old (it is a little over two years old) desktop has had issues. These issues have defied even my not inconsiderable computer skills. It had basically reached the point where I could not update any program ever. It started with windows updates and moved to every program. If I did a hard-drive wipe and reinstalled windows (it was running window 7) I could update the shit out of it for a couple of days, then that was it. After a week if I tried to update anything, the update would happen then massive freezing. No blue screens of death, just, "Ha-ha! Fuck you! Nothing works!" I had to hard reboot every time. We even bought a new hard drive at one point.
This all started happening days after my warranty ran out and very shortly after windows 8 came out...
Massive internet research has lead me to believe that a) there is something wrong with the actual computer (my gut feeling is mother board) and b) there was some funny business at Microsoft (which is by no means news to anyone). These two things seemed to have combined for devastating effect.
All along I've been trouble shooting it, and yelling at it, and there was that panic attack a few weeks ago. The computer may have been the final trigger, but it was by no means the root cause of the panic attack. But, nothing has fixed the problem. Completely reinstalling windows is really not something I want to have to redo every month.
Friday night, Craig walks in with a big dell box. I was completely surprised and slightly taken aback, to be honest. Sometimes, I have trouble remembering that I am not alone and completely independent. I have an awesome husband and partner who likes to do nice things for me. So, I now have a new computer. My old one had some kick-ass hardware (like the video card has been out over three years now and is still #4 on the awesome video cards list) so he basically got me a base model and we cannibalized parts from the old one. I will do some gut digging on the old one to see if I can figure out the hardware problem. Our network/security-system computer has definitely seen better days, so I may try to cobble together a "new" system from the two or three semi-cannibalized systems sitting around and our giant box-o-computer-parts.
Also, Friday now marks the day where my husband officially first treated me like he treats his mother. :-) I'm still not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Several years ago we knew she was having major computer issues with her ancient machine (and was having trouble getting a full time job post grad school), so when we went to visit her we just brought her a new one and set it all up while we were there. She cried and called us horrible people. Mostly, I just felt bad that Craig had been subjected to my computer induced bad mood way more than I realized.
Anyway, that is part of the reason that my queues ran out and I've been absent from the Tumblr. Now that things are set up and running and files have been copied, etc. I plan to get back into the groove.
I think it's time for all of us to admit that tumblr is way more fun on the computer than mobile. But that's too obvious
