                                      InOpen Intern class of 2013

InOpen has a pretty interesting history with interns. Since inception there is something different and crazy altogether about the internship experience. In past years we’ve had more than 15 interns and this we want to make a huge jump to 25.

I’m not gonna lie when I say that in the beginning we seemed to be panicking at the thought of a bunch of kids running around and tearing up our office, but everything turned out pretty great.

Our CEO Mr. Rupesh Shah attributes InOpen's conceptualization to his internship days at IIT Bombay which he feels has been a life changing experience for him. Interns are close to InOpen.

Our interns came from a variety of schools (IIT ‘s, NUS Singapore, Delhi University, Rajasthan University, Punjab University, SJSOM, and few others). With such a large class, we basically increased our engineering team by 30% overnight. Instead of fetching coffee or doing paperwork, our interns hit the floor running and were treated as full-time members of their respective teams (Academics, Operations, Business Developments, Support, and even working with CEO) working on user-facing projects critical to InOpen’s core.

Before the final shipment of Computer Masti it was edited again by the intern team to help make sure InOpen’s secret sauce stays secret.

Our pre - marketing strategy was formed in one of the Intern brainstorm meeting.

InOpen’s Hyderabad Operations were started because of an Intern’s effort.

Writing content which is featured directly in Computer Masti’s content.

As a whole, we think this list is really impressive, and I’d like to give huge props to our entire intern class for being able to deliver. The things they’ve accomplished this summer speak hugely to their creativity, ingenuity, and work ethic.

Around 8 interns went to become full time InOpen employees :-)

Here are few areas and responsibilities for new internship opportunities.

Market Research  - The Market Research Intern will be principally responsible for interpreting data, formulating reports and making recommendations based upon the research findings. To accomplish this task, the Market Research Intern will work with the client (either internal or external) to understand, define and document the overarching business object. She/he will be required to apply qualitative and quantitative techniques to interpret the data and produce substantiated recommendations. She/he will be required to frequently present the findings and recommendations to the client.

Operations Strategies - The Operation Strategies Intern will be required to analyze information obtained from management in order to conceptualize and define operational problems. She/he will be required to break systems into their component parts, assign numerical values to each component, and examine the mathematical relationships between them. The intern will collaborate with senior managers and decision-makers to identify and solve a variety of problems, and to clarify management objectives. She/he will be required to define data requirements; then gather and validate information, applying judgment and statistical tests. She/he will be in charge of designing, conducting, and evaluating experimental operational models in cases where models cannot be developed from existing data. 

Research for Industry reports - The intern will be required to do an in-depth research on the industry trends by going through reports and other materials available. He/she will create and develop products in accordance with market demands. His job responsibilities include researching and developing new and improved product lines, bringing these new products and processes to an industrial scale etc.

Content Validation - Serve as a key member of the Academic team that drives best-in-class content for all the clients. The intern will collaborate with the Business Development team, Academic team, Support team and vendors to ensure that the product content and non-product content achieves business goals and supports user experience effectively. The intern will be required to identify content gaps and develop content resource plan accordingly. She/he will help in guiding the content creation, maintenance, management and serve as a domain expert on various types of content, such as product data, images, videos, UGC, etc. The intern will be required to identify content enrichment opportunities based on customer feedback and in conjunction marketing /promotion and other business events. She/he will work with merchants, buyers and vendors to execute the content enrichment project and define content metrics and measure the value of good content. The intern will be required to research the content and report on relevant industry trends and best practices to identify opportunities for new or improved customer experience.

Qualities for the roles mentioned above:   

Ability to think clearly and independently.

Interest in School ecosystem and the educational scenario of the country across various education boards preferred.

Passion about Computer Science.

Should have high level of fluency in English both oral and written.

Should have excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills. Energetic, self-motivated and a team player.

          InOpen sowing seeds of Thoughtful Technology across India.

The workshops conducted by InOpen Technologies intend to delve into some of the very fundamental issues of the current education scenario. We are using technology to spread knowledge and to impart knowledge but are we focusing on teaching technology in the right manner? We just don’t want every child in our school to become a computer engineer but we want them to use technology in whatever they do. So how can we expose technology to the students in a structured manner?

InOpen Technologies has been trying to answer these questions through its 10 Computer Masti workshops which were held in a span of 21 days all over India.

The aim behind this series of workshop was to address the concerns of computer education in schools and to emphasize on the correct ways of teaching computer science. Through these workshops we were able to accomplish our task of outlining fundamental computer science areas that should be taught in schools. The workshops become meaningful when the teachers who attended it say :

"We have learnt something new today”.

Commenting on this, Mr Rupesh Kumar Shah-Co-Founder & CEO of InOpen said “ InOpen plans to slowly and gradually expand and make Computer Masti available to masses. This was one step in that direction.”

A workshop in Pune was completely dedicated to the schools of Deccan Education Society. It was attended by 25 teachers of the trust. They thoroughly enjoyed the hands on session. The attendees explored the applications of CM like GCompris, Tux paint, Tux Maths, Scratch etc. We had interactive participants making the session all the more interesting.

Breaking the language barrier, a workshop was also conducted for the Marathi medium schools in Pune in the PAI International campus. FOSS(Free and Open Source Software) was one of the many new concepts that was introduced during the workshops. The attendees appreciated the use of yoga sessions in between the curriculum.

Having received very positive respone for the Pune workshop, InOpen conducted another workshop for English medium schools at MES’s College of Engineering, Wadia Campus, Pune. A presentation on “Innovative Way of Teaching Computer Science at Schools” was followed by a panel discussion on “Computer Science @ School” A hands on session on some of world’s best Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) was also conducted. Applications for learning and teaching Computer science were taught in a fun and novel way.

After spreading wings in Jaipur last year, we decided to expand our ambit of services to Kota and Udaipur. Workshops were organized in both of these places. Presenting in the workshop, Dr Farida Khan, VP-Learning and Research said “For InOpen, teaching computers is just an excuse to, develop clarity in stepwise execution of any task right from planning to execution, develop clarity in communication, right thinking to creative presentations and develop confidence in solving complex problems using simple thinking.”

A workshop was also conducted in the Chemical Engineering Auditorium of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Talking about InOpen, Mr. Sharad Naidu, VP-Business Development said, “InOpen has chosen Computer Science as a vehicle to mould next generation technology users.” The attendees were extremely enthusiastic about Computer Masti’s attempt to focus on Concepts rather than skills.

The Bangalore workshop was held in Xavier Hall, PG Block, St. Joseph College, Arts and Science Block. The entire college was extremely excited about the workshop and was attended by almost 125 people. The workshop was first of its kind in Bangalore and the attendees left with a lingering thought about the current teaching methodology.

The Hyderabad workshop was held in P Obul Reddy Public School, Jubilee Hills and was attended by school principals and teachers from Hyderabad and Secunderabad. We also had workshops in Kolhapur and Mumbai.

The Mumbai workshop which was held in IIT Mumbai had 80 attendees from schools across the city. The sessions were insightful, entertaining and enriching according to the participants. People could relate to the issues that were being raised and identified with the need to impart correct computer science education.

The attendees got an opportunity to meet, interact and discuss with academicians and industry experts about:

• The current scenario of Computer Science education in schools.

• Its gains & pains.

• Future implications and the road ahead.

Computer Masti Workshop in Deccan Education Society, Pune

Deccan Education Society(DES) was established in 1884 by late Shri V. K. Chiplunkar with Lokmanya Tilak and M. B. Namjoshi . Later on few other prominent people joined them.

A hands on Computer Masti workshop was held by InOpen for DES group of schools on 29th November 2012. The workshop was organized in Pune in one of the DES group of schools. 25 teachers of the trust attended the workshop. A presentation on Computer Masti was given by Mr Manesh which was followed by a hands on session facilitated by the academic team of InOpen.

The Hands on session was thoroughly enjoyed by all the attendees. They explored the applications of CM like Gcompris, Tux paint, Tux Maths, Scratch etc.

The best part of the workshop was that it was an interactive workshop. Teachers were enthusiastic to ask questions and learn more about Computer Masti (CM). Though FOSS was a new concept for all of them, they encouraged the CM methodology.

They appreciated the use of yoga sessions in between the curriculum.

Towards the conclusion of the event, principal of the school shared her experience and the history of the DES and her school. We look forward to work with the DES and together raise the standards of education.

InOpen turns 3 ! Sharing a letter from our CEO

InOpen is 3 today. Yayyy ! Here is a letter from our CEO - Rupesh on this occassion

My Best People,

Today is a big Day for InOpen. We have completed three years of our existence. 3 years, Phew !

We have not only managed to stay afloat but do great for Ourselves. I congratulate Us.

I was naive (still am) and had practically zero money with me when I came to Bombay three and half years ago. Some really good People supported us by giving their offices, funds, free services, mentorship and lotsa warmth to start InOpen. We owe a lot to them. However, We had plenty of passion and belief for Ourselves. That did the trick. This has been most important learning of my life till today. Businesses can be built on faith on Belief; Money and Other stuffs follow.

I never believed that World is an ugly place. All my life, I had a choice of Optimism and despair. I chose being Positive. I share the same thought with whoever seeks my advice. I always feel that we are in midst of an an adventure which has just begun. We need to just make it amazing everyday.

Our First School

InOpen has a lot to be proud of. We are able to offer the best when it comes to teaching Computer Science in Schools. In last 3 years, We have managed to implement and positively influence almost a quarter of a million students. Thank You Everyone.

There’s no question that InOpen is in the midst of a major transitional period. The company is to raise Series A investment, launch Computer Masti e-book, a new and much better support system for our Content, and redefining customer experience all within the next 12 months. Understanding the need of students and schools will help us improve the school experience. And that awesome School experiences would clearly make money.

This I feel is a solid chance for InOpen to deliver some really interesting competitive products. All changes at InOpen is to put the customers first, allow us to move fast, and to get the stuff done. The outcome of these changes will be a happy and profitable InOpen! Much better equipped to innovate as fast as our customers and Education industry require. Only Excellence shall matter. Of course, there will be challenges. We will overcome them.

My Lovely Team

Team InOpen has always been a set of hardworking people, on a mission, and with a promise. I am proud of Each one of Us and I love you. I couldn’t have asked for more. I know that for some of us it’s impossible not to wake up excited about work; the chance to make a difference in the School Education is the greatest motivation We have. Lets continue to have the fun. As my co-founder Prof. Sridhar says we started the Computer Masti project and InOpen to be happy and enjoy the whole process.

I would like to just share one line advice from Bryan’s famous Coca Cola speech “Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved”.

Steve Jobs motivates me a lot. I will sum up and share my learning from him in 3 sentences:

Computer Science : Then and Now ! Rupesh @ WES 2012

Mr. Rupesh presented a talk at World Education Summit at New Delhi. He spoke about Computer Science in Schools. The highlights of his talk were blending Computer Science with 21st Century Skills, Multiple Intelligence and Higher Order Thinking Skills. The focus was on emphasizing Computer Science as conceptual learning and not merely developing skills.
