I’m very amused that while my autistic friends are certain that I am not autistic, allistic strangers seem to presume/state/suggest that I am autistic surprisingly often.
I have mixed feelings about community diagnosis when it comes to autism (When someone who shares autistic traits is identified as autistic by autists they know and interact with) and it’s mostly positive. It’s often an important step in exploring neurotype and whether it is correct or not it is useful to consider. The main risks in my view are a) “I want to be like my friend”/”I want my friend to be like me”, and b) Allistics socialise to be similar to their friends, possibly resulting in autistic behaviors being displayed.
