Alfa Romeo Brera
Alfa Romeo is a legendary Italian brand founded in Milan in 1910. Its history reflects the main stages in the development of the entire European car industry. In the early years, she specialized in the production of expensive cars with high dynamic performance.

The Alfa Romeo Brera concept car is a project by Italdesign, presented at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. The design of its body, with some changes, passed to the production model, in contrast to the mechanics.

It is difficult to determine what dominates the design of the car - the "generic" signs of the brand or the fresh ideas of Giugiaro. In favor of the first one is evidenced by the "alpha" radiator grille in the form of a shield, dominating in the design of the front end, traditionally round headlights, round cutouts in 20-inch rims with different-sized tires, rounded contours. In favor of the second - solid air intakes in an integral bumper, windshield turning into a transparent roof, guillotine-type doors, an abundance of polished aluminum in the cabin, front and rear lighting technology of the same shape, a "formula" filler neck, double rectangular exhaust pipes. Purely arithmetically, there are more innovations, but they are so competently linked with the "classics" that, on the whole, a very successful and harmonious combination is formed. In general, the result of the "compilation" is beyond criticism. Had the design award of the year been awarded, Giugiaro would have won it "in view of a clear advantage."

The Brera has a 2 + 2 landing formula, despite its rather solid dimensions (4388x1894x1289 mm): in "Big Tourism" a 4-seater car is nonsense. Not enough for the GT category and the current maximum Alfa Romeo engines of 250 hp. The engine that meets these requirements (V8, 4.3 l, 390 hp, 451 Nm) is borrowed from the Maserati Coupe, and to improve weight distribution, it is slightly shifted back relative to the front axle.

For the same purpose, the Cambiocorsa 6-speed electro-hydraulic sequential gearbox with gearshift buttons on the steering wheel (Alfa Romeo calls it Selespeed, Ferrari F1) is interlocked with the main gear. The drive with such a "filling" is, of course, rear, but the official press release casually mentions the joint work of ItalDesign and the engineering firm Mantovani on an all-wheel drive transmission.

The use of Maserati units may serve as indirect confirmation of rumors that Fiat Auto S.p.A. intends to form an exclusive luxury car group with some unification, which will include Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati. Brera may become her firstborn. According to Giugiaro, "except for the doors, there is nothing utopian in it."
