we do no such thing, we are liars and we knew it with every boldfaced word we said

Quick writing question aka How To English

If character A thinks - or rather recalls something that happened earlier that day, a conversation, e.g. can I write it like this

‘dialogue’, he said

‘ssss’, he replied

He inclined his head and left. 

or is it

‘dialogue’, he had said

‘sss’, he had replied

He had inclined his head and had left her.

.. like .. regarding the dialogue the latter somehow seems right but with the actions .. it’s so many had had had .. it confuses me -.-
