These outfits first appeared during a photoshoot with photographer Scarlet Page in 2004 when she photographed the band for the second time for Kerrang! magazine (for the issue published on the 23rd October, 2004).
The idea came from the band itself, as Till reportedly owned a book featuring portraits of East German women. The outfits the band brought to the shoot strongly resembled uniforms of the National People's Army (Volksarmee in German).
Scarlet Page talks about both photoshoots she did with the band in this video (I’ve already linked it in another post, but I watch it regularly because it’s so interesting, and Scarlett describes it beautifully how well coordinated the band worked together).
The outfits also appeared during the band’s only acoustic concert of their career, held on September 30, 2004, as part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Motor Music record label (source). The band performed five songs: Los, Dalai Lama, Ohne dich, Amour, and Sonne. Notably, Los, Dalai Lama, and Amour had their live premieres during this concert (source).
