new script for an as-of-yet pretty much non-existent lang!

thinking of syllabic nasals and liquids and a simple (c)v(c) syllable structure. will probably treat this as a protolang. although it may be a tad unnaturalistic to give it a script like this. so I may actually make this a logography. but for now I could use it as an English cypher with some modification.

Standard intergalactic (STAN)

Woof, finally putting some of this here. I have three conlangs in development at the moment for Cosmosis, my main story/game project. The most common/relevant language, which is also a conlang in-universe, is standard intergalactic, which looks like this:

I made a font for it way back in Fontstruct, but it took a while to get situated because this script has “small” and “tall” letters, where small letters (f, i, n, p, r, s, & t) double up in a single space if they’re next to each other. So I had to make a separate glyph for each combination & then create a keyboard layout in MSKLC to be able to access those letters with normal keystrokes. Some other variants are included here that use d, ch, long o, and short u because of dialects.

It’s been really annoying trying to find Android apps that can use imported .ttf fonts in general, but luckily, Add Text does the job and can make stuff look cool.

I haven’t made a whole lot of words yet, even this many years into development, but I do post about it occasionally on my deviantArt & the grammar is relatively settled. It’s fun to write stuff in it, but I don’t do it often enough.

Sounds For An Upcoming (Proto)lang

gonna worldbuild juuust enough around it to justify multiple decendants. maybe. I still have to make rules for how these sounds fit together.

I'm planning on giving some of these guys (probably one of earliest groups to split) vowel harmony (and also probably some nasal consonants).

also these guys will have extended contact with my Enderians That is still rocky to the present day.

I've decided to add two new sounds 'hn' and 'hm' because I already have 'hr hl and hw.'

When choosing a phonology, you need to have a series of sounds, sounds that relate to eachother. I'm choosing preaspirated sounds and lateral sounds. That's why there's not many stop consonants and affricates.

Now to figure out the phonological rules I want. What consonants can appears at the onset and the coda, and maybe even the nucleus?? Looking at you Српски

Onset:

All vowels and p t d c q h hw hr hl ll tl j

Nucleus:

All vowels and maybe r in the future

Coda:

All vowels and f s z ch x ' l

So a word like Hlæf is allowed but a word like Chæq is not.

Now to decide what syllable structure I want.

I want it to be like ConsonantVowelConsonant (CVC). This is called closed syllable structure. It'll look kind of unruly because I have consonants that use multiple letters for one sound so it'll be like Hlachhras and stuff like that.

Now to coin some basic words to make grammar via word order

Time to make a proto phonology or whatever. I'm keeping in mind what kind of sounds I want it to evolve to. My vision is a language with a a trill and a lot of lateral things. I find things that occur in American English to be fascinating, like that alveolar flap that appears in double t and d sounds. Also t-glottalization that appears in places with the southern drawl. I want my conlang to feature things like that, maybe even get rid of t's and d's entirely. Yet I have to have them in my proto phonology so it can develop the way I want it to.

So I'm thinking:

I'm also a big fan of lenition. Hence why all of the stop consonants have a fricative equivalent. I also made most of them voiceless because allophony will make them voiced and leave room for future developments.

For the vowels I was thinking about having a six vowel system, maybe have most of them be at the back because they'll all start fronting anyway. Starting from the front it's:

i as in hit

æ as in hat

a as in fall

œ as in book (not the most intuitive I know, but since English doesn't feature that letter it MIGHT be alright for English speakers (sorry Danish speakers))

o as in sort

u as in flue
