Connie put her foot in the doorway of the soda fountain to keep the door from slamming shut, balancing a brown paper bag of groceries in one arm and holding a bottle of soda and a white paper bag of candy in the other. She waited until the door touched her foot, then let it gently close and re positioned her items as she began a brisk jog towards the sidewalk. Grandpa had needed a few groceries for dinner, and had given her a little extra for a treat or two. But the line had been longer than she had expected and it was already getting dark, dark blue streaking the purple-pink sky as the yellow sun slipped down in the west. Shuffling through the white bag, she grabbed a red sucker, tore off the wrapper and popped it into her mouth before she began the mile long walk back to the house.
