This wipes package design is the same one that I use to explain the denotative meaning. The connotative meaning of this design is this one is really soft and no harm for the baby. Because there are two bears on the package, one of it is the mommy bear and the other one is baby bear. The baby bear is holding the wipes and both of them are smiling. So it told the consumer that you can use it for your baby and it has no any harm chemical included. The connotative meaning is something that the designer trying to express under the denotative meaning. So the consumer needs to figure it out, and it just like the secondary meaning of the design.

Connotative meaning: The same package design will have some other meanings when you have enough time to feel it. For this candy package design, the connotative meaning will be the designer want to shock the consumer or get attracted by this candy package. Connotative meaning is the meaning under the words, and will be some emotion or feeling of the designer, for this one, the designer want the consumer get the point of how strong, or how surprise this candy could be, so the designer use this exaggerated font and the color contraction of the background to emphasize the word meaning.

Connotative Meaning

Definition: Meaning, symbolism, or ideas that are not-clear/tacit just by viewing them. As opposed to denotative meaning, which has an explicit or clear, straightforward way of viewing something; connotative meaning requires critical thinking and even background knowledge at times in order to fully understand what is meant. More often than not, these meanings can be subliminal or be interpreted in many ways, often leaving the viewer guessing and thinking.

Example: The denotative/clear meaning of a picture of an apple is that it clearly represents an apple: a fruit that grows on trees and is eaten once ripe. 

However, with knowledge of business, media, and technology, one could infer that an apple represents Apple: a company that manufactures software and hardware and uses an apple as its logo. 

From another stance, an apple could be a biblical allegory to the Apple of Eden. In this story, Satan manipulates Eve into defying God’s will and consuming the forbidden fruit, which results in her banishment from the Garden of Eden.

In reality, it would just be a picture of an apple, but all of these secret meanings remain true at the same time (depending on who looks at it).
