This is the logo of Montblanc, the world famous pen and ink company. This logo represent the top of Montblanc mountain, and covered by snow, which is the highest European mountain. The designer want to use the logo to represent that Montblanc company commit to become the top or the highest quality in the crafts field. And every time when I saw this logo, it will reminds me this brand, so it is the larger identity system which bring a small piece of design to represent the big company.

This is a good example of data visualization. The author used six graphs to describe the things in different elements. For example, there are four different things in lead elements, waste, transportation, smelting and processing and others. The graphs will showed it in a clear way than paragraphs, because it was so easy to see how many percentage it has compare to the whole parts.

This poster is a design that reminds me about past style. Because the glass and the color of the hat that this snoopy wearing, both of them reminds me the world war two, and the pilot glass. Also the scars are moving with the winds, which means this snoopy is trying to fly, even he is just sit one the ceiling of the house.

If you did not see the “chili sauce” on the bottle of this sauce you will still know that this is the hot sauce because there are lots of hot peppers on the package. Symbolic function means how the symbol means when they showed off. For example, those red peppers showed me how spicy the sauce is, without telling me this is hot sauce.

This is the back of the battery package design, and there is a scissor and some cross lines. The designer trying to tell the consumer use the scissor to cut the package when they trying to open it. The indexical function always work by combine the meaning of the design with the thought of the consumer, for this one the consumer will know that they need to cut to open it when they see the scissor.

This is the package of the band-aid, and there are three icons on it. One of it is the question mark, which will tell the consumer if you have questions you could call this phone number, besides that icon, there is no such a thing that told you need to call. So this icon works and tell the consumer need to call this phone number. Secondly, there is a recycle icon that direct the consumer to recycle this box when they used all of the band-aid, also there is no sentences told the consumer to recycle it besides this icon. Finally, the icon of the FSC, is just like the trademark. The iconic meaning always use icon, or some shape to tell the audiences to do something or to express some meaning, and sometimes, icons work better than the words.

This wipes package design is the same one that I use to explain the denotative meaning. The connotative meaning of this design is this one is really soft and no harm for the baby. Because there are two bears on the package, one of it is the mommy bear and the other one is baby bear. The baby bear is holding the wipes and both of them are smiling. So it told the consumer that you can use it for your baby and it has no any harm chemical included. The connotative meaning is something that the designer trying to express under the denotative meaning. So the consumer needs to figure it out, and it just like the secondary meaning of the design.

This is the package design of flushable wipes, and it has the denotative meaning by using the word design on it. For example, it says fresh mates, and explain this wipes can be flush down by the toilet. Also the water drop or the bubble at the background explain the fresh wipes. Denotative meaning always tell the audience about what is it in a easy way, and it will not distract how audience think about it. So usually the meaning that the designer trying to express is same as how the audience think.

Pussyfoot font is the font that I found which connote something else. As you can see, the letter was made of the movement of animal, for example, the letter “y” is represent the movement of a cat.

This page of the magazine is the modernist design that I thought after I watch the video. This one has simple color and clear design, because it was easy to see and did not involved lots of design which will distract the audience.

Antique Olive and Gill Sans are two fonts that I found has the small x-height. Compare to the large x-height, the font with small x-height looks smaller than the font with large x-height,and it looks tight.

The Spartan Classified font is the font that with a large x-height. X-height is the x-space, which is the middle part of the letter, and as you can see, the portion compare between the top part and the middle part is not even.

Crossbar means the letter with a cross bar on it, for example, the letter :”t” has a bar on it and it just cross the body of the letter.

Counter means the closed part of the letter. q, p, and b are some examples of the letter with counter. The closed part can be at the x-space, above the x-space, or below the x-space.

“j” is the letter with descender, however, the capital J is not the letter with descender, it is the letter with an ascender. Descender means the the part that below the X-space.

h is a letter with ascender, because the top part of the letter is above the x-space. X-space is the middle part of the letter. For example, not only h, some other letter like Y, k, are also the letters with ascender.

This is one of the study book on my bookshelf. Through this photo, it has a clear typographic hierarchy because the title has the biggest size of font and in bold. The sub title is a little bit smaller than the topic, and the chapter number 2 is the most attractive one.
