OH LOOK, more pictures from the Elle China Sleep No More Shanghai photoshoot!
McKinnon official Weibo account posted this letter from Conor Doyle, who answered a question from an anonymous fan about book and movie recommendations to SNM fans in general.
Sleep No More Shanghai cast in Elle: Andrea Carrucciu, Conor Doyle, Fred Gehrig, Omagbitse Omagbemi, Tang Tingting, & Emily Terndrup.
I can’t get over how odd this is. Thank you @dunwannawakeup for getting me a copy. :)
What are boy witches in McKinnon Hotel like?
There are two aspects to this question.
One is the Boy Witch routine in McKinnon is somewhat different from the one in McKittrick, a major part is the existence of a brand new 1:1, which was added after my last trip so I haven’t experienced it yet; and a different cabaret song, which for me drastically changed the dynamic between Boy Witch and Porter. I know the routine is still evolving, but the overall impression I had was the Boy Witches over there are more vulnerable and broken. Another trivial thing is less nudity. (Adding: the Shanghai Boy Witch does not do as many nor as intense dances as the NY Boy Witch, which is a great regret for me.)
The 2nd I assume which might be your real interest is how about the performers who currently play the Boy Witch in McKinnon. I might not be the best one to answer this one, because, within my limited trips and shows, I couldn’t help but stick with people who I felt familiar with, mostly McKittrick alumni. For example, Olly Hornsby-Sayer, Conor Doyle, and in my last trip, Austin Goodwin. They were as brilliant as they were here in McKittrick. I was there when Conor performed his 1st show as Boy Witch in McKinnon, which was quite a memory for me. I haven’t caught Steven doing this role yet since he also started after my last trip, but I could imagine him killing this role as always. Plus as I mentioned before, that show has too many things that were new to me even with my NY show experience, I didn’t really spend that large chunk of my time watching every Boy Witch, so I really can’t comment. I would suggest you follow the unofficial SNM Shanghai cast list which is maintained by @bewitchedwhitemask
Last but not least, let’s keep in mind, Conor Doyle, who is the creator and master of this role, is working there. So, Boy Witches are in good hands. Along with this line, a new room in the attic of McKinnon, Room 802, curated by Conor Doyle, is recently open for booking. It is said to be filled with fascinating details to reveal the backstories of some characters, including the Boy Witch. I would be very tempted to stay there if I ever go back to McKinnon again.
OMG Conor Doyle was Macbeth last night
Shanghai friends I need to hear more
“The space is also part of the performance just as much as it is for the performers. It would be just as fun to break away from the crowd, open a room alone, find a story in the letters, get lost in a maze, rather than follow a character wherever he goes. If people ask what to do if they lose the hero in the show, I tell them go and find yourself a new hero.
“There are really no tasks to complete. It is your experience of typing into something you are interested in. With the mask on, you are the director of the show. You are in control of how you see the world. So, take the gift and be creative with it."
Wise advice from one of my favorite Punchdrunk people. Great article & interview with Conor Doyle about Sleep No More Shanghai.
fuckin miss this fuckin asshole, don't know if i've mentioned this recently or not
today i am mostly just being maudlin about the fact that conor looks like he is never coming back from shanghai, i'm very grateful for all the time i have been able to spend with him during faust and masque of the red death and duchess of malfi and the drowned man, but i do now wish i'd made more of an effort to face the crowds and follow his boy witch when i had the chance 😭😭😭
