THE STRANGE COUNTRY, (1940) by CONROY MADDOX

MADDOX has been a true believer in the original, radical ideas of Surrealism since 1935. He was really critical of the International Surrealism Exhibition in LONDON in 1936, saying that it featured artists who weren't really involved or knew anything about the movement.

This painting has a lot in common with MAGRITTE'S paintings, like the way the events and space are distorted. One person's head is a balloon, and the muscleman looks like he's coming out of the frame. Plus, the sun looks like it's replaced by a huge match.
