Basic Intro to Wine Smells & Colors
Each person has their own method to observe and smell the wine. These are very important traits to get the most out of your glass of wine. Learning the proper technique is very important however, so you should try to master it.
The professionals and wine connoisseurs all have a similar routine when it comes to smelling and observing wines. The standard for observing a wine’s appearance is to tilt the glass at 45 degrees against something that is neutral or white colored. This can be a cloth or a white wall for example. Anything with color in it will change the way you perceive the color, which is why neutral or blank is preferred.
Next, you should look for the color intensity. Is the wine a pale color, or is it very dark and intense? Also observe the pattern in which the wine fades away from the middle of the glass to the outside. Is it fairly consistent color, or is the centre darker and the edges much lighter, even watery? This will tell you how old a wine is. The more consistent the color, the older it typically is.
Not only is the color important, but also the texture. The texture can be clear, cloudy or even brilliant. Unfiltered wines are generally not as brilliant as the filtered ones but should not be cloudy. If you received a cloudy wine, unless you are intentionally ordering some specialty wine, you should question the winemaker about the texture. Typically cloudy wines are not the standard.
