A BIG Farmland Bird Count
The ConSoc team are back from taking part in the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust's Big Farmland Bird Count at Brackenhurst.
The idea is for farmers to go out for half an hour and count the highest number of each bird species they see at a time. The data is vital in determining patterns in farmland bird populations. Birds are the best key to farmland biodiversity as they are easy(ish) to view and because they help to gauge population trends in other species, including mammals, invertebrates and plants.
Bird sightings from Saturday 7th February:
Blackbird x7, Blue tits x5, Buzzard x1, Canada Goose x1, Carrion Crow x10, Chaffinch x10, Fieldfare x30, Goldfinch x5, Great tit x1, Lesser Black-BAcked Gull x22, Magpie x3, Redwing x56, Reedbunting x11, Robin x3, Greater Spotted Woodpecker x1, Song Thrush x4, Wood Pigeon x13, Wren x3, Yellowhammer x20.
There is still time to take part; the survey runs until 15th February. Find out more here.
