The Consulting Analyst – At the Shore

We’ve reached the end of a road.
Episode Specifics: This is a little bit difficult to summarize in a concise way, since it’s effectively a 20-minute “where are they now?” segment—the curtains close on the drama of Edmond Dantes, literally, and Gankutsuou’s narration is ceded over to Albert’s as time skips forward five years. The answer, by the way, is “happy, or on the way to being so.” It’s a relentlessly hopeful ending that sees the near-completion of a peace treaty between future-Paris and The Empire (attempting to discuss future politics in vague and metaphorical ways continues to be the series’ weak point), all of the characters happy in their chosen careers or with people they cared about, and with the past left behind but not forgotten. Maximilien retires from being a soldier; Mercedes moves back to her beloved hometown; Peppo becomes a model, and Haydee is about to be crowned with Albert as the ambassador from Earth.

The Consulting Analyst – Edmond Dantes

We’re going to finish these before the end of the year, watch and see.
Episode Specifics: Edmond and Fernand face one another in a duel, ending in a stand-off with Haidee and Albert’s lives on the line. Fernand concedes in an attempt to save his son’s life, but Edmond has been overtaken by the spirit of Gankutsuou and longs only to give his enemies suffering at any cost.
Albert breaks the spirit’s hold over Edmond with a kiss, causing his heart to start beating once again—and thus allowing the piece of sword Franz left behind to do its work. Dying, Edmond asks Haidee and Albert to remember his name as the palace beneath the Champs de Elysee crumbles away.
This episode can seem like a decided outlier compared to the rest of the series. Up to now, the series has mostly been characterized by the slow-burning calculations of the Count and the struggles of the cast that’s caught up in the bounds of Neo-Paris’ suffocating nobility. But this shift in tone isn’t out of nowhere—in fact, the show’s been quietly setting up for it.

Episode Specifics: Back in Future Paris, Albert has to face the fallout of the accusations against his father. The press is swarming, poor Eugenie is locked in her house and watched around the clock, and everywhere he goes people are confirming that yes, Fernand is the actual worst. Not just Lucien and Beauchamp, but his own mother, who reveals her origins and tells him they have to take responsibility for their actions because Mercedes is underrated inside her story and out. In Marseilles, Franz puts together the truth behind Edmond Dantes, and rushes back to Paris to try and prevent Albert from doing something irreversibly stupid.

The Consulting Analyst – The Letter From Edmond -Vrai Kaiser

Episode Specifics: Maximillien decides to get Valentine out of the Villefort house (summarizing that “she’s lonely/in need of support” and not “she could get so very murdered the second we turn our backs,” but at least the action is right), only to be told that if he attempts it Villefort will have him arrested. Meanwhile, the heads of the three major families all receive an invitation to a funeral sent by “Edmond Dantes.” Albert follows them to the location, and overhears them talking about a terrible crime perpetrated against this mysterious man. When he arrives back home, he learns that Maximillien, Franz, and Renaud have gone without him to rescue Valentine, and rushes to help them just as the would-be heroes find their escape route blocked by an armed and angry Villefort.
In the vein of giving the ensemble cast more agency rather than “letting the Count do all the cool things because he’s the hero dammit,” Valentine’s plot here is a remixing of what happens to her in the book: there, it’s Noirtier (her grandfather) who takes a few sips of lemonade and almost dies, for which she is blamed; and later the Count, having had a change of heart, puts her into a deathlike coma to spirit her out of the house and basically give her as a present to Maximillien. It is….gross. it’s really gross, y’all.

The Consulting Analyst – I Dreamed A Dark Dream -Vrai Kaiser

Neo-France’s weather has an excellent sense of dramatic timing.
Episode Specifics: Albert rushes to tell everyone of Madame Danglar’s collapse, inadvertently drinking the poisoned water meant for Valentine and collapsing. As he recovers, the Count tells him of the poison and intimates that the Villeforts might well be in danger in the future. Rushing to the Villefort estate in hopes of presenting disaster, Maximillien, Franz, and Albert are too late to prevent Valentine from being poisoned – and the Count, who was able to brew a cure for Albert, is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Villefort hires a spy to dig up information on the Count’s past, and Franz overhears the name “Gankutsuou,” stoking his suspicions of the Count’s untrustworthy nature.
I doubt it will surprise you to hear that the visit to the villa is a great deal shorter as Dumas wrote it. Everyone goes to the one non-renovated room together and the Count tells them that he was shocked, JUST SHOCKED, to find the skeleton of an infant when he was planting his trees out in the gardens; and gee, what’s the penalty for infanticide in France these days? Beheading, right? It’s totally beheading. And then everyone goes home, suitably frightened or enamored with the Count’s new wealthy friend.

The Consulting Analyst – The Secret Flower Garden -Vrai Kaiser

I’m starting a very important Kickstarter dedicated to getting all these sad children hugs. But especially Franz though.
Episode Specifics: The night at the opera goes on, with Max issuing an impassioned challenge to Franz over his claim that he only likes Valentine as much as any other girl. The next day, Albert attempts to sneak Max onto the Villefort escape, where he proclaims his love for Valentine. Albert tries to smooth things over, but Valentine is having none of it, angry that many people want to tell her their feelings but never consider hers. Meanwhile, the Count makes flirtatious contact with Heloise de Villefort, discussing toxicology with her and gifting her a ring meant for covert poisonings. Elsewhere, Baptistin springs a young man named Benedetto from prison for unknown purposes.
New marks in the “we’ve made the Count deliberately more callous in this adaptation” ledger: Haydee seems to have been genuinely unaware that Fernand would be at the opera, meaning her distress was absolutely genuine. And yet, though she is silent, she forgives him. Book Count, for what it’s worth, is pretty straightforward with her as far as why he’s keeping her in reserve as far as his larger revenge plot. Here, this change puts Haydee more in line as a foil to Albert: two individuals deeply enamored with a version of a man, with their feelings little more than inconvenient parts of a master chess game; the question then being, is it better to know or to play one’s part in ignorant bliss, believing only the surface of the game?

The Consulting Analyst – Her Melancholy, My Melancholy -Vrai Kaiser

That is the classiest tracking shot of bouncing breasts I’ve ever seen.
Episode Specifics: The Count introduces himself to the Danglers family, securing a bank account with no upper credit limit from Danglers by depositing an enormous sum, and winning Madame Dangler’s affection by first buying her prized horse only to return it on seeing her upset. Having acquired a box at the opera, the Count invites Albert and his fiancée Eugenie – and, it turns out, all their friends – to attend the show. The Count, meanwhile, has engineered his own show: the resplendently dressed Haydee, center of the night’s attention, faints dead away at the sight of Fernand de Morcerf.
This episode features two minor but interesting rearrangements of character: first of all, that Albert is far more present for the Danglers business than he was in the novel, further enmeshing himself in the Count’s plans and serving as a source of information (in this case regarding the horses) in place of the many informants the Count employed in the book. It’s a consolidation of narrative detail, but it also adds to the sense that Albert in particular is the unwitting architect of everyone’s downfall, and not just one of the cogs caught in this machine of vengeance.
