Context is for kings

1.      I LIKE that the mutiny is such a FUCKING big deal that literally everyone knows burnhams name.

2.      I ALSO LIKE that Burnham carries that weight of a 2 ton conscience

3.      I ALSO LIKE “we’re all gonna die” Burnham does NOTHING bc shes ready for it. Same girl.

4.      Rather than starting the second episode from burnhams perspective, I would have started it from the perspective of the ship, really echo and mirror the beginning of the Vulcan hello

5.      The conceit of having the prisoners eat with the rest of the crew is dumb af but I like showing that burnham is a fucking BADASS and criminal. If this was told from like, tilly’s perspective than this had the chance to be even more interesting

6.      The appeal of star trek is that you have a world to live in. you are given a sandbox and you can build whatever you like. This is just throwing the sand out of the box because you can.

7.      I LOVE TILLY AND SHE IS AN AMAZING FOIL FOR BURNHAM

8.      This could have been such an amazing opportunity to look at the lower decks of the ship

9.      I LIKE the idea of a super secret science ship. It also creates interesting conflict with a TRAITOR on board

10.  Anthony RAPP IS A FUCKING DELIGHT

11.  I like tilly being really scared of burnham and treating this like highschool. It does a lot of show don’t tell and is kinda fuckin funny

12.   I like burnham stealing tilly’s saliva and using it as a way to break in, but I also like the idea that the fabric she caught it on was the shit tilly said she was allergic to.

13.  Lorca’s my way or the highway attitude is like, kind of GREAT??? And an excellent ideological foil to burnham. Its enough to make me not angry that hes a white man because its CALLED FOR BY THE CHARACTER

14.   I like that stamets is CLEARLY gay, not just in his being-married-to-a-dude-ness but in his cadence and mannerisms “I HATE YOU HOW” but is still a very competent character and both of these things are treated as normal without being BLATANT

15.  I don’t know how I feel about the star wars-y shuttle bay

16.  WHY THE EVER LOVING FUCK. THE EVER LOVING FUUUUUCK DOES LORCA HAVE A TRIBBLE ON HIS DESk. WHYYYYYYYYYY.

17.   I LIKE SECrET SCIENCE IN THE FACE OF A WAR, that’s an interesting conflict

18.  Lorcas speech at the end is a GREAT MISSION STATEMENT FOR A SHOW

19.   I think the only irredeemably stupid decision in the whole thing is the spock thing

20.  I take that back, the mindmeld thing is dumb too

The Enemy

Even the familiar thump of the Charon exiting warp did nothing to soothe the fury. Her daughter was gone, her shuttle obliterated with tricobalt charges two weeks in to the hunt for the Buran.

A hunt that was finally over.

"Begin firing the moment that we are in range."

"Aye ma'am. Fifteen seconds to threat vehicle. Weapons hot."

The crackle of a comms channel. Stamets' voice, distorted a little by the background radiation in his lab. "They've seen us, ma'am - their shields are up. But I got a full scan in. He's not on board - he's on the surface."

"Route his location to tactical. Beam down a capture squad."

"Threat vehicle is using unknown evasive patterns. Struggling to maintain a lock."

"Try harder." Her voice carried every ounce of her fury. The tactician flinched, but worked his console.

Seconds passed. Bolts clipped the Buran's shields but nothing made full contact.

"Capture squad has engaged the enemy. Encountering resistance."

The tiny vessel started to fight back, rear guns only, every salvo splashing next to harmlessly from the Charon's shields. But they were draining their impulse power to do so, evident from the Charon's shots falling much closer to home. Four more grazes and two solid hits and the Buran returned to pure evasive, heading once again for the heart of the storm.

"Capture squad is dead or dying! Transport signal from his location to the Buran!"

"Intercept, redirect to the brig. Keep firing!"

"Ion storm is interfering with targeting sensors, ma'am!"

"And why aren't you thinking? Remember the tricks we used against the Andorians when they used ion clouds for camouflage. Polarise viewscreen and implement."

The tactician's eyes widened, and a deadly little smirk crossed his lips. "Aye ma'am. Adjusting deflector, charging electron pulse. Maintaining lock."

More valuable seconds. The viewscreen dimmed drastically in preparation for what was to come.

Stamets' voice again, wavering, no doubt in fear of the soon to be impotent rebel. "We have him."

"Charged. Firing... now!" A dip in bridge lighting as all but auxiliary power lanced out from the Charon's deflector, a single bright white bolt cracking from her prow into the Buran's flank, wrapping around its shields and into the heart of the ion storm.

The lightning conductor fulfilled its duty. The secondary exotic particle trail from the Buran's shields outward drew the storm's fury. The unrefined energy hammered into Lorca's ship as though ten ships were firing at once, a vicious and deeply satisfying staccato of unfiltered, unprocessed energy tearing her shields away and searing black fern onto her hull.

Her nacelles dimmed. Inertia carried her forward.

"Tractor beam, pull the threat vehicle away from the storm. Tactical, destroy its reactors."

A single heartbeat of hesitation and then a "Yes, Emperor."

The Buran shuddered as the tractor beam pinned her in place and a pair of energy slugs burrowed into her engineering section, reducing her warp and fusion hearts to so much molten slag.

Her lights failed for the final time, and a silence fell over the bridge of the Charon.

"Treachery protocol three. Leave them to languish in reactor radiation, let them suffocate, beam them back at the last moment. Fix any who might die. Consign every last one of them to the agonisers. Stamets, is he locked away?"

"He's either furious or delusional, but he's here."

"Wonderful. Transport him, and yourself, directly to the Imperial interrogation chamber. Before we send him to the agonisers, I wish to break a few of his bones."

"Aye, Emperor. Thirty seconds to transport."

Three slow breaths, and the pitch of battle left her. The Buran's remains would be scavenged, her dedication plaque welded to the hull plating beside a weapon port as testament to the consequences of insurrection. His crew would scream for the rest of their lives. And he...

Twenty paces from the bridge to the interrogation chamber. More than enough time to unholster her scepter, test its weight, be ready to crush a kneecap the moment he arrived.

The final whorls of light and sound as the transporter finished its job. A single heavy strike and her scepter found its mark, bringing the hated captain down on one knee without a second to orient himself.

"Traitor," she spat. But then he recovered his stance and looked up in confusion, and her most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Qo'noS, Regina Andor, Philippa Georgiou Augustus Iaponius Centarius, stopped in her tracks.

He did not even recognise her?
