Italian  Sculptures Etched with Modern Day Tattoos

Italian artist Fabio Viale blends in the old with the new in an effort to make the classical statues look like they have travelled in time to belong to this era.

He covers these marble antiquities with tattoos, etching motifs and patterns that are inspired by Chinese and Japanese aesthetics. 

He recreates iconic sculptures with an unusual contemporary twist, adorning their arms, shoulders and the vast expanse of their backs with detailed designs. Viale uses intricate black and white patterns that are sometimes intensified with a hint of polychromatic hue in the mix. 

Though the statues might fool you into believing that they are comprised of marble, the artist makes use of polystyrene, rubber or paper, his daft hands executing them brilliantly.

The most fascinating aspect of the series is the obvious paradox embedded in it; while marbles statues stand as a symbol of royalty, nobility, piousness and sheer elegance, the tattoo artworks represent  avant garde elements. Having a tattoo is seen as a form of freedom in expression, a way of pouring your inner thoughts and feelings out through design, something the rich and the noble, despite being wealthy, did not have the opportunity to indulge in, their lives always being confined within the boundaries of titles and power.
