War On Fugue
Listen to Bach, Die Kunst der Fuge, played be the incredible Glenn Gould.
For the first time in a very long time one of my teachers decided to choreograph on a small group of dancers I sometimes dance with. Contrapunctus 1, the first piece in the video, is the one I share with a few others. We’ve been rehearsing for a few weeks, and it’s been one of the most moving things I have done in a while. I haven’t been dancing properly since my body decided to break, and now to go back there just once and dance to this perfect and beautiful music is doing things to my mind and soul I had thought would never happen again. I had forgotten how much this whole dance thing means to me, beyond the mere technical work in the studio and making my body do things it cannot do anymore. I had entirely forgotten the pleasure of becoming music, and that I could still do it, even with all that physical damage. Turns out my body remembers all these things, and that is probably the best lesson I could have learnt this year.
Sorry for the sappy shit. Go and listen to Bach. Take it from here, Johann Sebastian.

Bach - Contrapunctus 11 from the Art of Fugue
This is my second favorite fugue of the set, right behind the final unfinished one. This fugue is so dense, and it uses chromatics so often, it doesn’t feel bound by Bach’s time period. I guess the timelessness is what makes Bach’s music so popular still. Here, he takes two other subjects from earlier fugues in the set, and puts them together to create developing double and triple fugues. The music builds up and up to the point that it feels like it will collapse on itself.
