Since contributor applications will be going live tomorrow, here are the full guidelines!
What are the requirements for writers?
3 works are required in the application, the word limit for each work being 3k (all works adding up to 9k.) The linked works can be excerpts from longer fics or they can be finished fics (within the word limit) and the links can be from Tumblr, Ao3, FF.net or Google Drive. Please ensure sharing is on so we are able to see your work if it is on Google Drive.
There will also be the option of linking your portfolio which can contain however many works you wish. The link can be to any one of the four places mentioned above.
The linked works do not all have to be based on BNHA/MHA but we would like at least one to be. The main thing we are looking for is your ability to tell a story within a limited word count as this will help us form an idea on if you will be able to do so in the allocated word count. Works also do not have to be a historical AU but we would like you to link at least one AU work.
Writers will be required to pair up with one artist for this zine. This will be decided after everyone has entered the discord server and we will set up a spreadsheet to help everyone pair up so it’s fine if this your first time doing so.
We will be asking what word count you’re most comfortable with - this will not affect your application as it is only there to help us form an idea of what word count will be best for our writers. We will also be asking which era you would like to write for which is required so we can make sure we have writers for each era but don’t fret about whether you chose the same era as others since you will have the option to choose your top 3 choices. We will also ask if you have any ideas for your fic - this will help your application by letting us know what kind of fic you’d like to write but it is not required.
What are the requirements for artists?
3 finished works are required for the artist application. We will also require a portfolio - this can be catered or a link to your art tag on your social media (the portfolio can include whatever you wish.)
The works do not have to follow the theme of this zine but we do require 1 BNHA piece and at least 1 piece with a full background. This is so we are able to see your capabilities in drawing characters relevant to the zine and in drawing backgrounds.
We want to see works that can tell a story in the sense that we can comprehend what is happening in the artwork and see how you characterise characters in your art. Our zine has many different eras and so the characters will be in different situations throughout the zine so we would like to see how you tell a story through your art, this is especially important since some artists will be paired with a writer. Please keep in mind that we are not looking for one particular style and it’s what has been stated above which is most important.
We will be asking which era you would like to draw for but you will be allowed to choose your top 3 choices so don’t worry about whether your choice will hinder you from being accepted. This isn’t something we will reject applicants on.
We will also be asking you if you have ideas for your artwork but this is not required and will not hinder your application.
If you have applied to be a merch artist, you can still apply to be an artist (or vice versa) as we might ask those who did so if they would be willing to do both a full artwork and a merch item for the zine.
What are the requirements for merch artists?
3 finished works are required. We will also require a portfolio but this can be catered or a link to your art tag on your social media.
You do not need to have previous merch designs and are free to link any of your artwork as long as at least one is BNHA/MHA themed. However, if you do have any previous merch designs, then please consider linking them.
We will be asking whether you’re willing to make more than one merch design but this will not affect your application as it is not required for you to make more than one design.
We will also be asking what type of merch you would be most comfortable doing (you will be asked to choose 2 items that you do not mind doing.)
We will also be asking if you have any ideas for your merch design, however this is not a requirement.
If you have applied to be an artist, you can still apply to be a merch artist (or vice versa) as we might ask those who did so if they would be willing to do both a full artwork and a merch item for the zine.
We hope these guidelines are concise and easy to understand when you go to fill out your application! We completely understand if you feel apprehensive about submitting an app because you’re worried about its success rate - we (the mods) have all been there when applying to zines. But, we stress that you do not worry about that and apply if you want to apply! We will carefully and thoroughly go through each and every application and we will be judging based on the criteria above - nothing else!
With that said, we will be opening the apps soon so please keep an eye out for that!
