Where did you get the inspiration for your piece?

I just really like mushrooms and I love glowy things so I combined the two for my charm!

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

I really love the sketching and lineart stages of art, especially lineart! Usually my least favorite is coloring because I still struggle with lighting and feel I could use a lot of improvement there!

Where did you get the inspiration for your piece?

space! since the indigo color had a space related theme, i decided to paint a setting which had stars and a planet adorned by clouds.

What's the story behind your fairy?

the fairy's name is Dandelion! she's a fairy who travels from planet to planet in order to collect these little "star pieces" you see her holding in my artwork. they are extremely important to her home planet for a reason i'm still figuring out. i had this idea of fairies needing to breathe floral scents for the longest time - that's why she has some roses that function as her "oxygen supply" on her back! her home planet is full of giant flowers that keep fairykind healthy and thriving. also, her wings are somewhat "enhanced" by the astronaut suit, and help her travel easily through space and foreign planets.

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

i really liked figuring out the how the light coming from the star she's holding hit her body! it was also a lot of fun to work with limited colors and paint the clouds. overall a very pleasing experience.

Any other cool details about your piece you'd like to share?

this is most likely a concept for the character since i might change her colors to resemble a dandelion, true to her name. but her main design is done!

Where did you get the inspiration for your piece?

I've always been a huge fan of nature spirits and fae. People have been drawing inspiration for the supernatural from the natural since forever, and yet there's still many ideas to be explored! In particular I drew a big piece of inspiration from a photo I saw long ago of a particular gravestone...

What's the story behind your fairy?

The Fae in my piece is a tree spirit, a single guardian on a lonely hill. The only significant piece of the environment is the gravestone placed at their roots, worn down and broken. Another spirit, a ghost leans against the gravestone with the fae watching over them. It's melancholy, but also comforting; two forgotten souls finding company with each other.

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

I actually really enjoy lineart, though this particular project really did stretch those skills haha,,, Coloring is tough for me but I did have fun working in the premise of a focus color and figuring out the accents to highlight it best!

Any other cool details about your piece you'd like to share?

The gravestone. A key detail, and purposefully plain with artistically strategic breakage.

What's the story behind your fairies?

The fairies presented in my pieces are fairies of harvest and growth! I haven't thought much of them, but I'd like to think they go around and sing to the plants to help them grow, and often sing in pairs just because it's nice to have company on the job! For fairies I had made up for this zine, I am quite fond of them and hope to one day revisit them as proper characters!

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

I quite enjoyed coloring them as coloring is always the most fun for me in most pieces! I get to spruce everything up after I line everything which brings me so much joy! The struggle for me though was mostly capturing the right atmosphere for my piece, but I can now that I think I did good on that end too!

Fairy Fact Friday #6

Today we’re exploring the legend of Âu Cơ, the fairy queen and mythical mother of the Vietnamese people. 

Âu Cơ was a kind mountain fairy who was saved one day by Lạc Long Quân, the dragon king of the coast. They fell in love and Âu Cơ gave birth to a hundred eggs, which hatched into a hundred beautiful children. However, Âu Cơ always longed for the mountains while Lạc Long Quân longed for the sea, so they split the children and trained them to govern their respective areas. These children are said to be the ancestors of all Vietnamese people.

Where did you get the inspiration for your piece?

I had already decided what kind of environment I would draw with any color. For the yellow one it was going to be either the sunflowers or the bakery. Once I started to try to come out with ideas for each one, I realized how much more I  enjoyed doing the concepts for the bakery. That's why I chose that one.

What's the story behind your fairy?

The basic idea is it's just a fairy that likes to bake bread and little friends. You can find one of the little baked friends in the illustration. I haven't given the baker fairy any name. But one of my friends calls them "Bimbo" after a bread brand we have in my country.

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

My favorite part was coming up with the whole concept, the design for the fairy and the composition of the piece. And while working with just one color was fun, it was also quite challenging. Even now I feel like I could have used it better in my piece.

Any other cool details about your piece you'd like to share?

There was a lot of staring at bread pictures in the process. And I was hungry 80% of the time I was working on the piece.

What's the story behind your fairies?

They happened to come across some ruins in a different forest. After making themselves a fire, the dragon that lived there approached and got along with them, tucking itself to sleep right there besides them. The blood moon was in the sky and one of the fairies decided to give her companion a rose made of flames to wear in her hair, she plays it off as something done out of boredom but her cheeks go a little too red once her friend finally smiles at the gift.

What was your favorite part of the illustration process? What was your least favorite?

This was one of my all time favorite pieces to work on I think, I really found myself enjoying all the nature elements and lighting I added, the wood texture, the fire, the rocks, I had a blast with all of them. My least favorite might have been working on the fairies themselves, but honestly, only because I didn't need to try anything new with them.

Any other cool details about your piece you'd like to share?

I wanted to draw a subject other than a flower because I drew those a lot at the time, so I almost went with little fire hummingbirds for the piece, but couldn't make it work with the concept and went back to flowers.
