Conversational Notifications

We’ve had a few people ask us about this, and now that this feature seems to have hit all desktop users, it’s time for a comprehensive post about it!

What is it? What’s going on?

When you comment on a post (reply, or reblog with an addition), Tumblr now automatically subscribes you to all other new comments on the post, putting notifications in your activity feed for them, almost as if it were your own post.

This can be nice for chit-chat on small/personal posts, since it allows you to see a reply to your own reply without needing to be tagged in it. If you get subscribed to a post with a ton of attention, however, it’s much less fun.

How do I stop it from flooding my activity page?

Easy! Turn it off on bigger posts. You can easily subscribe to or unsubscribe from any post you didn’t make, by pulling up the post’s notes, and clicking the circled lightning icon in the top-right corner.

How do I turn it off completely?

Also easy - it’s in your Notification Settings. On mobile, you can find this setting under Account > General Settings > Notifications > Conversational notes.

Tumblr Settings Tuneup: Conversational Notifications Tumblr added a setting for Conversational Notifications, which is on by default. When you reply or reblog with comments, you become subscribed to other’s post comments (e.g., “tubastank also replied to this post”) in Activity. You can turn this setting off in Notifications Settings. On mobile, you’ll find the setting by tapping the Account/Person icon > Gear icon (upper right) > General settings > Notifications > Conversational notes.

If you leave Conversational Notifications on, you can toggle notifications per post (silencing the busier ones) by viewing the notes. Click or tap the lighting bolt icon in the upper right of the notes.

On the desktop, a white bolt on a blue circle means notifications are on (subscribed) and a blue bolt with a white circle means notifications are off (unsubscribed). On mobile, when you tap the bolt, you’ll see a prompt telling you if conversational notifications are now subscribed or unsubscribed.

For a few days I’ve been getting my notifications swamped by comments anyone and everyone made on certain really popular posts I reblogged. Like, if someone interacted with that post, I’d also receive a notification for that. Obviously, that’s fucking annoying and I could barely keep track of my actual notifications, since they were lost on a sea of spam-ish notes. So I contacted Tumblr support about it. Here’s their reply:

Hello, Thanks for asking about this. Our engineers are always testing new ways to display Tumblr, and it sounds like your account may have been selected to experience one of these tests. Thanks for your patience while we work on this! You may see these options go back to their original design as we continue testing. You can opt out of receiving notifications about individual conversations by tapping on the lightning bolt icon in the top right corner when viewing the notes on a post. If you’d like to turn off these notifications entirely, tap the account icon (the little human), tap the gear wheel icon, then tap Global settings, then tap “Notifications.” From there, turn off “Conversational Notes.”

So I’ve been chosen. Amazing -__-

The good news is that it comes with instructions to turn it off. Can’t try the “Global settings” > “Notifications” > “Conversational notes” because as far as I know that’s the way to do it through the app, and I don’t have it. But I did the lightning bolt thing, and it seems to work.

- Step 2: view the original post’s notes and tap the indicated lightning bolt icon:

Now you know how to turn this thing off in case you’ve also been chosen, or if this feature starts rolling out in the future.

OMG!!!! Is that what happened?!?! I can’t figure out how to turn it off and I’m drowning in notifications!!!!!! I’m exclusively on mobile & THIS SUCKS.

There is a way to turn it off, especially in mobile: You go to your Account (the image of a person), then to your Settings (the image of the wheel), then to ‘General Settings’ (text), then to ‘Notifications’ (text), and at the bottom there should be a line for ‘Conversational notes’ (text) and a toggle you can turn off.

It seems this solution also turns them off in a laptop - but at least for me, it got reactivated again without me setting it so, so it pays to check every now and then that the feature is still off in your mobile.

It is also worthwhile to write to Tumblr Support and tell them you don’t like that feature, at least when it is forced upon you - just click here and write away. The more people tell the developers what they think of their new playthings, the better... Hope this helps!

What do you mean by ““Conversational Notes?”

Hello! That is a new feature of Tumblr - presumable still in testing stage and thus maybe not applicable to everyone’s blog - which means that if you reblog a post, all replies and comments to that post, made by anyone and not necessarily having anything at all to do with you or your reblog, get fed into your activity feed.

In other words, if you reblog a lot, your activity feed becomes a public comment forum that may or may not be of interest to you, and in some cases may even be triggering or disturbing to you. And it means that any comments that are addressed to your original posts or respond to your specific comments are obscured by all the other notes.

It is a highly annoying feature for anyone who would like to keep in touch with activities specific to their own blog, not with all kinds of random posts.

Ugh!!
