Called my dad the other day to get some advice on scheduling a few interviews I'm going to next month. During this conversation I started complaining and bitching about some of the people in my cohort and this is what my dad told me,
"Well you have to understand that a lot of people stay where they're most comfortable and not a lot of people venture out of their comfort zone or have the guts to do what you did (i.e. people in the Midwest typically stay there, people in California stay there, etc). And unlike a lot of them, nothing was ever handed to you. You've had to work hard to get where you are and you've had to scrap and fight and work your way to the top by yourself to achieve the things you've accomplished already in life. And because of that you have a greater appreciation and deeper understanding of people in general and the struggles that some people have to go through. Just ignore them and do what you need to do to."
I was pretty much taken back when he said this to me and definitely started tearing up a little.
