One time someone said to me that when you skip fillers you’re not a true One Piece fan. Certain someone that haven’t even read the manga.
Totally. You must watch ever single filler to be a true One Piece fan.
How can anyone's One Piece experience be complete without this guy?
Or how about the incredibly important role this dude played in shaping the futures of the entire Straw Hat crew?
Or how about that arc where everyone got amnesia (which we all know is the most original plot device ever) and no one was mischaracterized at all?
Or how about the time when Luffy lost a fight to a disgraced former Commodore (not even an Admiral, not even a Vice Admiral, not even a Rear Admiral--a former Commodore) and had to turn into a disturbing giant thing in order to defeat him?
Oh, and let us not forget the most recent filler arc, which was more or less predominantly dedicated to animal abuse
Heaven forbid that someone skip these highly original and well written and very important filler arcs in favor of focusing on what is actually the original and canon story of One Piece.
Heaven forbid you read the manga.
Seriously tho--One Piece is infamous for having extremely bad filler arcs. The G8 arc is quite good and I would recommend everyone watch it, but it's the exception to the rule. I honestly do not see how anyone could ever defend them to anyone. The idea that you have to do _____ to be a "true fan" of something has never sat well with me for a variety of reasons, and I'm not about to say it myself for anything. I won't even say that a "true fan" of One Piece needs to read the manga, considering how bad the anime is (take a look here for an explanation of how bad the pacing is, and here for a look at how the animation is so sub-par, and here for an explanation of who exactly at Toei I'm mad at)... but I will say that anyone who refuses to read the manga and exclusively watches the anime is shooting their One Piece experience in the foot, receiving a vastly inferior product, getting misinformation about characters and events, and willfully missing out on canon content. And I simply hope that their poor misguided soul can be saved some day.
