There's a neat little eyecandy program called Cool-Retro-Term which applies shaders and effects reminiscent of old terminals to a terminal emulator. It's fun and silly and fairly lightweight. I took some cute screenshots of my music players with it, if nothing else.

Cool-retro-term is written in the C++, use Qt GUI toolkit with qmltermwidget, a QML port of the qtermwidget class from the Konsole terminal emulator, was tested on various Linux distributions and can be found in their repositories.
