Deeply disturbed & saddened to know about the shocking demise of India's First CDS & Great Son of the Soil, General #BipinRawat, his spouse Smt. Madhulika Rawat & other armed forces officials in an unfortunate Mi-17 helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. Wing Commander Prithvi Singh Chauhan was pilot of the Mi-17V5 which crashed with 14 personnel on board including CDS Gen Bipin Rawat. He is the Commanding Officer of the 109 Helicopter Unit. They were travelling in crashed near Coonor near Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri hill district. The aircraft was on its way from Sulur IAF base in Coimbatore to Defence Staff College in Wellington. A sad day for the Country. It's a colossal loss for the Country. General Bipin Rawat shall always be remembered for his diligence, dedication & discipline. He made sterling contributions to the armed forces. India's first Chief of Defense Staff, General #BipinRawat, passes away after an Airforce Mi17 helicopter crashed near Ooty in Tamil Nadu. General Bipin Rawat was born in Uttarakhand in 1958. His father, Lt Gen Laxman Singh Rawat, was also in the Army. Inspired by his father, he joined the NDA. After the NDA, General Rawat joined the Indian Military Academy, where he was awarded the 'Sword of Honour'. During his tenure in the Army, which began in 1978, he handled operations in Jammu and Kashmir, the LAC and the Northeast. He also played a critical part in the 2015 Myanmar Surgical Strike. His 4-month leadership during United Nations operations in the Republic of Congo - heading The MONUSCO Brigade - was hailed as critical in stabilising that country.
