Another morning, another wonderful day in paradise! That’s what you thought! You always tried to keep a positive attitude even if some people around you may be a little down. You had always made sure to befriend every and anyone in your path, it didn’t matter who! You were gonna befriend them. Tom Nook? Easy! Redd? A walk in the park! Cranky and snooty villagers? Not a bother! However. There was one person who had persistently stayed away from you, yet kept you close. It all started in a little town way back in 2012. You were the mayor and so it was your responsibility to make sure the town was perfect and that all your residents were happy. One day, you were getting a new villager. You still remembered the day you got her profile.
“Mayor? Could you come here for a moment?” Isabelle asked you. You walked up to her desk with a smile. “What is it Isabelle?” You asked her. “Well, we’re going to be getting a resident in a few days and I thought it’d be in your best interest to look at her papers?” She informed you. Just like she did every time a new villager was moving in. But you didn’t mind. You wanted to get to know them so it was good to know a little about them before hand. She handed you a stack of papers neatly stacked and being held together by a single paperclip. You started to flip through the pages, taking all the time you needed to read through every part and make sure you got all the information. “Muffy huh?” As you said this you got to the page where there was a little picture of her. As you looked at your future resident, all you could think of was how pretty she looked. You felt your face warm up the more you looked at her and you could practically feel your heart skip a beat. “Mayor? Is something wrong?” Isabelle asked you. You quickly put down the files, face becoming bright red once you realised you had been staring. “OH! Y-YES ISABELLE! I Umm...I was just looking at all the information! Yes! The information!” Nice save. “Oh alright! Well like I said, she’s gonna be arriving in a couple of days! Weather you want to make that public knowledge or wait until she arrives is up to you.”
A couple of days later you were waiting for your newest resident to arrive so you could personally welcome them to the village. And sure enough, as the train stopped at the station by the town, you could see a black and white sheep wearing some sort of scarf leave the caboose. She was carrying a bag that seemed a bit to heavy for her. You quickly rushed up to her to help her out. “Oh! Hey do you need any help carrying anything?” You asked giving her a smile. She looked into your eyes and it felt like your heart had practically exploded! “No. I can do it myself” she stated simply, no aggression held in her voice. “O-Oh! Of course! I’m Y/N! The towns mayor! It’s my responsibility to make sure everyone is happy so if you ever need anything feel free to ask!” You told her. She just quietly nodded and walked past you.
And that’s pretty much how all of your interactions with Muffy went. You would talk to her, mostly with her giving one or two word responses. Nothing much. She was a real challenge with befriending. Most of your fellow townsfolk told you to give up and not put too much energy into her. Oddly enough that only fuelled your desire to befriend her. You didnt see her as a challenge, more like an opportunity. An opportunity to learn more about an individual who was very different from you. Most days, you would see her walking or sitting by herself. Reading or smelling flowers. You wanted to get to know Muffy, and you were not gonna give up on her.
That was five years ago. You and Muffys relationship hadn’t changed much other than her being a bit more active when talking and she’d stopped ignoring you all together. Walking down the street, Muffy could hear rapid footsteps approaching her. She turned around to see it was non either then you. Her mayor. “Evening nightshade”, was all she said before turning back to walk. You ran up besides her and gave her a smile. “Hello Muffin! How’s your day going?” Muffin. What a peculiar nickname. At first, she didn’t really like it when you called her that. But as much as she hated to admit, it had started to grow on her a little bit. She didn’t hate to hear it, but she preferred to be called by her name. “good.” She told you as she stopped by the park and sat down on one of the benches. You followed and took the place next to her. Weird. You seemed a bit down, like something was wrong. Curiosity ate at her as she tried to ignore it. She wanted to find out Why you were acting so out of the ordinary.
“So umm...this is gonna be hard to say but umm...I’m actually going to be moving away in a few days...” this made Muffy stop dead in her tracks. What? “I’ve told everyone and you were the last person whom I had to tell...” that hurt for some reason. Muffy didn’t like you all that much, but to know that she was the last person you’d tell about something as big and important as your move? It stung. “Why?” That was all she could muster to say. She didn’t know why this got her so...well she wasn’t sure what this made her feel. Anger? Sadness? Betrayal? I mean, she rarely talked to you but you still talked to her a lot. She felt bad knowing you’d leave. “I-It’s not like I don’t like it here. Being mayor here has been the best years of my life...but...I want to expand, explore new frontiers! I’m going to be moving to this campsite! And....I know that you probably don’t want to...but if you ever feel like stopping by, here’s a brochure.” Boom. Those words made her heart break in two. Had she really been coming off like she didn’t like you? Sure she might not have had the most mutual relationship with you but she still enjoyed having you around. It made her days feel a bit less empty. As if she actually had a genuine friend. She didn’t of course, and it wasn’t like she didn’t know that. She directly didn’t put in any effort to talk or get to know anyone in town. But that didn’t stop you from trying. And she thought that was very cute and admirable. Not enough for her to put in any effort to get to know you though. After all, look where she’d been if she’d befriended you. You would move away and then she would only hurt even more. She has felt heartbreak after heartbreak until she just couldn’t deal and just stopped trying to make a connection. Relationship only set you off to hurt and be vulnerable. And Muffy didn’t want that. Nevertheless, she accepted your brochure.
That brochure. It had been the bane of Muffys existence for the last few weeks. She had been there when you stepped on the train that would take you away. She had bid you farewell and said that would be it. Once she got home she even threw the brochure away, not wanting to see it. Only to pick it up again hours later. For weeks she’s contemplated going to your campsite. As the weeks went by she started to hear more good things about it and even got genuinely interested in visiting. And finally, she caved. She packed her bags to visit your campsite for a while. Once she arrived she ran into you almost immediately. And at first you apologised like crazy until you saw who she was. By that point a large smile graced your features. It was her, she’d really gone out of her way to visit you. Caught up in emotions and the fact you hadn’t seen her for quite a while, you scooped the sheep up in a strong embrace. Letting out a string of giggles as you swung slowly from side to side. Meanwhile Muffy was trying to process what was happening. You were caressing her lovingly. She didn’t understand why, but she felt so safe in your arms. Feeling like nothing would hurt her. Like nothing could get her. So hesitantly, she wrapped her arms around you.
For the next three years, Muffy would come and visit your campsite. She would still keep her distance and her walls up, not really actively engaging in conversations with you. But she was starting to talk a lot more when you spoke to her. And that was an improvement! You were sure that you could break through to her if you kept trying. I mean after all, if she truly didn’t like being with you, she wouldn’t visit your campsite as much as she did. Sure it could just be because it was popular but there was hundreds of campsites that she could visit that didn’t include you. She was warming up to you, you were sure!
One day, you would get a call from an old friend, someone you hadn’t expected to hear for a long time.

“Hello? This is Y/N L/N! To whom am I speaking to?” You answered with glee, thinking it was just a business call. And it was, in a way. “Y/N? Oh great I reached you! Oh I tell you, Isabelle is a lovely girl but lord knows how long you have to wait before she can forward your call hehe. But she is a sweetheart ain’t she?” The voice on the other line baffled you. Tom? You hadn’t heard from him for ages! And here he was, calling you up again. “Tom? Hi! Gosh it’s been such a long time! How have you and the boys been?” You asked him in complete and utter delight. Hearing him again was very nice, and from the tone of his voice it had seemed like he was doing much better. You had known Tom for a very long time, ever since 2005 when you moved to a new town. He’d been very grumpy and hadn’t really enjoyed your company at all and had mostly just tolerated you. And as the years went by your bond started to grow and he started getting nicer. Not just to you but to everyone. After a while he’d opened up to you about his life. You gave him plenty of support as he was rehabilitating, learning how to open up and trust people. It had been very hard for him to let his guard down ever since...the incident...but you made sure to tell him that you were there and if he ever needed help or someone to talk to, you’d always be there. Even after you moved away you still found time to visit him every now and again. And look at how far he’d come. You were honestly really proud of him.
“Oh why we’ve been great! Thank you for asking Y/N dear. How have you been yourself?” He asked you in an elated manner. “You giggled and happily replied. “I’ve been doing good! My campsite is really growing as of late. It’s a little stressful but I manage!” You told Tom the honest truth, because you felt like you could always do that with him. There where no sugarcoating while you were around each other. “Oh? Well that’s actually something I wanted to bring up. You see Y/N, how many years have you stayed by my side, helping me grow my corporation and myself as a person? How many villagers have you helped and befriended? Listening to their problems and hanging out with them? I saw you go from one of my fellow residents, to employee, to mayor, and finally to campsite owner!
More importantly, how much free time have you yourself gotten? Just to spend it on just yourself and not with someone else?” This question caught you if guard. When was the last time you had time for yourself? ”Gosh, i honestly don’t know if I’m behind honest...” you told your friend and former boss. “Mhm? Yeah I had a hunch. So, I’m proposing a suggestion! Nook inc is going to launch a new product! The island getaway package! It’s something I’ve been working for a while now. Just imagine. No worries, no responsibility! Just an island paradise we’re you can live peacefully with your other residents!” The tanooki said. You always admired his way of announcing his pitches, ideas or just things in general to people. It really made you listen. “Oh that’s sounds lovely! I’m sure it’s gonna be a success!” You said, encouraging your friend. Now, you didn’t just say so to be polite, you really did like the idea of an island paradise where you didn’t have to work 24/7. You loved working at the campsite but sometimes it was just too overwhelming.
“I’m happy you think so! I was actually going to ask if you’d like to be apart of it! I truthfully think that if anyone deserves a break it’s you Y/N. Not only were you such a good mayor back in the day but you’re a great campsite owner as well! You’ve helped me find myself when I was at my darkest days...and I wanna return that favour! Isabelle has told me about how hard you work, I just think it would be good if you took a break hm?” He had a point. As of late, you had overworked yourself a lots you knew it was bad for your mental health but you still did it. Maybe...maybe going away for a while wouldn’t be so horrible. But what would you do with the campsite. Maybe Isabelle could handle it for a while? You hoped so, because right now you really did need a break.
So that was what you decided to do. You let your good friend Isabelle run the camp while you were gone. It was planned that you were just gonna stay for a couple of weeks. But if you felt like Island life was what you wanted, you would call her up and she would sell your campsite to another owner. You were currently sitting in the plane that would take you to the island. Currently only with two other residents. The first one was a penguin wearing a flannel. He was lifting one of those small hand weights while watching a movie. The other one was a black pig wearing a pink dress. You looked over at her, you’d be lying if you said she wasn’t pretty. She kinda reminded you of Muffy in a way. You clearly had a type. However, caught up in your thoughts you hadn’t realised that you were practically staring at her, so when she turned her head to look at you you froze up. Oh god. What should you say? Do you wave? Smile? Look away? Your brain ran at full speed, thinking of what to do, but it went full stop when she rose up from her seat and went over to you. Oh no! Was she gonna tell you off for staring?! This isn’t a good start to your vacation! What if-
“Hey, can I sit here?” She asked you, diluting her head slightly as she did. Her eyes were full of intensity yet still a level of calm. It was almost hypnotic. “Uh y-yeah! This seats not taken!” You said maybe a bit to loudly. This seats not taken?! Of course the seat isn’t taken! There are only three passengers on the damn plane! Luckily, she laughed it off. Finding your nervousness kinda cute. She at down next to you. “I’m Agnes. And you are?” She asked, giving you a slight smile. “I’m Y/N. Y/N L/N!” You told her, a bit calmer. “Oh? Aren’t you the campsite owner?” She asked you. You nodded your head as she asked this. “Well what are you doing here? If you don’t mind me asking?”
That was months ago. You and Agnes had spent the entire flight talking to each other. It was very easy to talk to her and you really liked her. Once you arrived at the island you, Agnes and the penguin who you learned was named Roland, all got introduced to the island living. Needless to say, you loved it. It was really relaxing and in the end helped you make the decision of selling your campsite away to live on the island. By now, you had managed to develop the island a lot more. It had become very popular and you were going to get your final resident today.
“So, it’s a girl?” Agnes asked you. You nodded your head in agreement. “And that’s all we got? Hmm...I do wonder who it’ll be snuffle?” She said as she wrapped her arms around you. You leaned into her touch as you felt her plant a small kiss on your cheek. You and Agnes became official a couple of weeks ago. Your crush on her was obvious, like...REALLY obvious. Agnes however only later realised that she had fallen in love with you. And so, the two of you started dating. And you had to say, you felt great! The relationship was going very steady and you felt like nothing could break it down. You were all waiting in glee for your new resident, all you knew was that it was a girl. You missed the days when you, as a mayor, could get any information you wanted. You didn’t have to wait for them to arrive before you could find out who they were. Agnes could tell you were a little tense about the whole matter.
“Hey. She’ll be arriving tomorrow, what do you say we spend today at my place watching some bad movies? Just you...and me....watching...movies” you giggled at this suggestion. “Sure”
The two of you stayed up until 5 am while at Agnes's house. You had always been a heavy sleeper so the fact that you slept until 2 pm that day didn't strike you as weird. The first think you noticed when you woke up was a very distinct smell. Almost metallic in a way. But you pushed all of your suspicions away as you turned to Agnes. There she was, sleeping peacefully. You let out a sigh whilst admiring her. You grabbed ahold of the blanket you were sharing, you should probably wake her up. “Hey you...wakey wakey, eggs an-OH MY GOD!!!” As you lifted up your blanket, you wished that you wouldn’t have. Right in the middle of her chest was a big stab wound. It looked relatively fresh since only the outer sides of the wound had turned brown. “WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK!” You threw yourself off the bed, backing away from the horrid sight. “Fuck! Agnes! Wh-what do I do what do I do?!”
“So...let me get this straight...there where no witnesses of anyone else entering or leaving the house and the girl was the only one who was there with her? Very convenient don’t you think Brooker?” The police officer Copper said to his partner. “Now we do have evidence of the wound being freshly made. Of course there’s nothing that suggests that she couldn’t just have killed her as she was sleeping and then acted like she just woke up....” the two officers were discussing any and all possibilities of how this could have happened. “I say it was a crime of passion!” “Now now gentlemen. I have installed a bunch of security cameras all over the island. We can check those out and see if we find anything. If we don’t, you can interrogate Miss/Mr/Mx Y/N okay? Give them some time alright? Their girlfriend just died” Tom was telling the two officers. He was right of course, a bit away, sitting by the beach, was a human. Heartbroken and shaken up. You couldn’t believe it. She was gone, she was dead. You would never get to see her again. You had a shock blanket spraid over your shoulders. Your breathing was hitched and hot tears were still running down your cheeks. You were too distraught to notice the sound of footsteps approaching you. You tensed up when you felt a gentle hand grace your shoulder. Looking up, you saw the last person you expected to see.
“Muffy?”
“Hello nightshade...i...I heard what happened...do you need something?” This utterly shocked you. Was she...asking if you needed her help? “She’s...she’s gone Muffy...I saw her dead, right before my own two eyes!” Muffy sat down next to you, giving you a big hug. “I wanted to say...I’m here for you Y/N...I wanna support you like you’ve continuously supported me...even when I didn’t deserve it...so whatever you need, just tell me okay?” Oh my god. Was this really happening. Without a word, you just embraced her tighter, letting the tears roll down. She gently stroked your back as she tried to comfort you. “Shhh shhh. It’s okay. I’m here, I’m here” what you didn’t know was that Muffy was grinning. She was grinning from ear to ear, she was gonna have you. Finally, after tracking you down for so long, you were gonna be hers! No one could stop her. Not you, not Nook, not Cooper or Brooker, and certainly not that Agnes. It would just be you and her. Yes. Just you and her.
Just like back in the days.
