Weekend Review

We live in an area that gets a lot of tourists on summer weekends, so there are some places that are best visited on Sunday late afternoon, when the tourists have packed up. Cooper Lake is one of those places. While Beth played on her stand-up paddleboard, I rode my gravel bike for an hour. I'm still learning how to ride gravel and I'm getting better but I'm still not accustomed to going so much more slowly than on my road bike. I rode only 8.5 miles in an hour, though that included 1,100 ft of ascent. My normalized power was 209 which is pretty good for me.

Earlier in the day we caught a fawn peaking in our kitchen glass door before we headed to the deck to have a video call with our son and daughter.

Beth took advantage of the unusually warm weather to christen her inflatable stand up paddle board. She went to Cooper Lake; a beautiful alpine lake near our house. I like to ride there because it is about 15 miles from our house, at the top of 4.2 mile, 600 ft climb.

The water was cold and a little choppy so Beth didn’t stay out long, but she was able to get familiar with the board.

It won’t be too long before this lake is only accessible via snow mobile of snowshoe. Can’t wait!

During my cross country bike trip last year I got to know the 5 guides very well, including Blake and Megan, the married couple. I invited them to come stay at the house, but I suspect they receive offers like that a lot and didn’t think much of it.

We saw them again when we they guided our Palm Springs trip this spring. They had us over to their place for drinks and we repeated our offer.

This week as they were driving to Astoria to guide another cross country trip they accepted our offer and spent two nights with us.

As you’d expect, they are great athletes and up for an adventure. The first night we walked to Roslyn and then walked to the river.

The next morning I led them on a 25 mile bike ride into the Wenatchee National Forest near our home.

Beth met us at Cooper Lake, where we locked the bikes to the car and had a picnic lunch in between sessions on the lake. Beth brought her stand up paddleboard; Megan and Blake travel with inflatable canoes. I dug out my bib wetsuit and did some open water swimming. This is an alpine lake fed with snow run-off and was quite cold. I definitely needed the wetsuit.

I have a deep farmer’s tan! Also, I swim with a buoy for safety.
