Spoilers for the very last Hymns for the Road episode.
Adding some space after the cut in case someone opens via notifs
Hymns for the Road ended on my least favorite trope, a trope that has often made me completely dismiss the existance of a whole story, or at rhe very least the last installments, for long periods of time, one of which I'm still pretending doesn't exist after years.
The trope in which for some reason, the main set of besties has to split up at the end.
Copper left Silver, Amber and Glass.
And somehow, I'm still okay. It hurt like a bitch, and I want to cry again, but I'm okay with it.
Something about the way these characters were written, especially Copper, showing how they frantically get worse and worse- Copper struggling to grieve, getting more and more desperate to find the Somewhere Better, only for the group to entirely stop searching, to let it go and settle down somewhere that was just as unsafe as the rest of it.
The others found peace with it, they found happiness there. And Copper didn't.
I think the reason this hurt, but I'm not angry about it, is Copper had a real reason to leave. And the others had a real reason to not go with them.
Usually, the trope of the main characters splitting off forever until the sun explodes despite loving each other more than anything elae in the world is used as a way to end a franchise. And quite frankly, bigger companies are horrible at writing this as a trope! Do you know how many times I've sat there weeping as the main characters say their goodbyes, and making it seem like they could never see each other again, and I've screamt at them because they could visit each other so easily? That it didn't need to be "goodbye" because it could genuinely be "that sucks because I love you but I'm happy for you, live your dreams, see you on monday"?
Amber, Glass and Silver couldn't keep going on an endless drive to find some promised place that didn't actually exist. They HAD found the Somewhere Better. They were living there already.
Copper couldn't stay. It wasn't their Somewhere Better. And with how the world works now, you just... Can't guarantee you'll come back.
This last episode was written beautifully, the other episodes escalated to this. This wasn't just a cheap way to end the series, it's what needed to happen.
I said this as a joke yesterday, but I genuinely believe it to be true, both in Hymns for the Road and in real life:
The Somewhere Better is a state of mind.
Copper just had too much they needed to get over (that they couldn't get over) to be able to see that, and to settle down somewhere.
This world is too much for them. The number one thing that helped comfort them was the idea that they'd someday find a place, with dark walls, with light on the inside, with a guardian watching over, and it would be safe from the outside world. Someday they would find it and it would all just stop. They could do kid stuff in there. They could relax. They would be fine.
They all had to choose between the comfort of familiarity or the pain of changing. Amber, Glass and Silver all chose the pain of changing. I think Copper tried to, but it was too much. They chose the comfort of familiarity.
Even though I hate it, Copper really did have to leave. And the others really did have to stay. And for the first time ever, part of me is fine with that.
