In June of 1823, Isaac Earlysman, an ironmonger in Bishopsgate, London paid 50 shillings for a ride in the balloon Sparrow. Afterwards, he commissioned a series of tokens to commemorate the event. My research has shown four different tokens.
.) Isaac’s bust on obverse, Reads,”Isaac Earlysman, * Sparrow*”, no date. Reverse, no banner on balloon, no date, Reads, “Ironmonger Bishopsgate, London”
.) Obverse same as first, Reverse, Sparrow banner on balloon, Reads, Ascended at Oxford, June 23, 1823
.) Obverse has 18 and 25 instead of stars, Reverse same as first
.) Obverse read “Sparrow’s Leather Sauce”, Reverse has a larger balloon with Sparrow banner on it, Reads “Sparrow Nail Merchant, London”
