"cotton candy skies, why can't you be mine?"
"you're like the moon, i'm chasing after you."
you knew jake ever since high school started, when he moved in right next door. your parents invited them in with open arms, inviting them for dinner. that was the first time you ever met him.
it was clear he tried to talk to you, but you were too shy to even make eye contact. the moment dinner was over, you excused yourself to your room.
although, you had to speak to him eventually with your family always inviting him over. the first time you both spoke was when you went to kitchen for a glass of water during a movie night and he followed.
he smiled at you, finally introducing himself and apologizing if he scared you at first. you couldn't help but admire his features, did he always look that pretty?
"no i'm sorry i didn't speak...i was just scared." you quietly spoke, avoiding eye contact but you could feel his stare. "it's okay! maybe we can be friends now?"
you look up to finally see him, his eyes were sparkling, he was glowing.
this was the start of your growing feelings for him.
you both stuck together in high school. he tutored you, you tutored him, you both always hung out together.
jake was popular, meaning there was always girls wanting to be in a relationship with him. somehow it made you a tad bit insecure and jealous. knowing how those girls were beautiful and you really had no chance, making you drown out your feelings even more.
jake always kindly rejected the confessions, saying he doesn't feel the same and someone already has his heart. that sentence always tore your heart, you would look down at the floor, fidgeting with your hands. you never noticed when jake always said those words, he was looking at you.
your friends always tried to make you confess but you denied your feelings, saying you don't harbor any feelings for him. what if he rejected you? you didn't want to risk the friendship.
now, senior year just ended and summer began. the moment you and jake graduated, you noticed he began to become more touchy. as in holding your hand, hugging, or even cuddling. not that you didn't like it.
you both are now by your pool and jake was getting the floaties out from the outside closet. your parents was away from home for a little vacation, leaving you alone with jake.
"ouu, the unicorn! i forgot about this one [name]!" jake beams, showing you the unicorn inflatable. you giggled, grabbing it from jake and throwing it into the pool.
"hey! i wanted to jump in with the unicorn!" he said to you, crossing his arms. you didn't respond, looking at him smiling. he was beaming, he had a small tan, his hair fluffy. how can he be your best friend?
"is there something on my face?" jake asked, and it snapped you out of your thoughts. "oh no! i was just thinking about how we should order food." you utter, fidgeting with your hands. you quickly went to your phone, going to uber eats.
jake looked at you with admiration in his eyes. he wanted to confess so bad but he never had the right moment. he was always interrupted. you guys had very close calls, almost kissing or confessing but backed down.
you both spent the day with such fun, having a water ballon fights, water guns, swimming races, watching movies, just being with each other was enough for you both.
in the silence of the night with the faint playing of music, you both were still outside on the same unicorn floatie watching tiktoks. you were laying on his chest and he was holding your phone. the pool lights were on, and the moon was shining brightly tonight. jake couldn't focus on the tiktoks. he could only focus on you.
"[name]...?" he mumbles, and you hum back. "can i say something?"
you sit up, looking at him. your heart was thumping. jake sat up, his thumbs fidgeting with each other. "i waited 4 years to say this, and i feel like this is just so right. [name], i really like...no love you. ever since i moved in next door. i could never take my eyes off of you. you're always on my mind. when we aren't together, i miss you so much, no other girl could ever compare to you. please [name], let me be your boyfriend."
he looked up, making eye contact with you. you were shocked, after so long, he actually felt the same towards you as well? you smile at him sweetly. "of course. i thought it was always one-sided but i'm so happy you feel the same."
jake hugs you tightly, and you hug him just as tight. he breaks off the hug, just to admire you. putting his palm to your cheek, holding it. sooner or later, jake softly puts his head against yours. you both were just looking at each other. "can i kiss you?" he softly says, and you nod.
you both close your eyes when jake leans in fully to kiss you. his other arm going around your waist to hold you closer, scared as if you're going to disappear. the kiss leaves you both breathless and flustered. jake smiles letting go putting his fists up into the air. "[name] is finally my girlfriend!!!" jake shouts out loud, making you laugh.
"hey [name], guess what?" he looks at you, smiling cheekily. "yeah..."
suddenly, he pushes you into the cold water. "JAKE? what the fuck! the water is so cold!" you yell, while he laughs at you. "you're sooo getting pushed in." you declare at him and his laughing stops. "hey! hey! i have your phone! you can't!"
you swim, quickly grabbing your phone and placing it on the outdoor chairs nearby. you look back to see jake trying to paddle away but you swim under to flip the floatie, making him fall in.
"oh my god, it is cold!" jake cried out, and you giggled. he swam to you, hugging you and you wrapped your legs around his waist, hugging him back.
"we can always warm each other though." you feel jake smile against your neck and you couldn't have it any other way. you really love him.
