ᯓ★ now playing: About You - The 1975
Summer had finally arrived. The air grew warmer with each passing day, and singing birds once again filled the mornings. It was something you noticed every year, the way your mood instantly lifted as the temperature rose and nature slowly burst back into color.
It was your final year of high school and it felt strange knowing that everything was coming to an end, and that the people you had spent years seeing every day would soon no longer be part of your daily life.
But what hurt the most was the thought of not seeing Jake as often anymore. He had been your best friend since the very beginning of high school. No matter what happened, he always knew how to make you feel valued, appreciated, and cared for. That was just one of the many things that made him so special to you.
As the end of the school year drew closer, so did the graduation trip your class had planned together with the teachers.
Both you and Jake were beyond excited. It had been far too long since you’d last seen the beach, and the thought of spending several days by the ocean felt like a dream.
After all, what could be better than a free trip to one of your favorite places in the world?
You already knew it was going to be an unforgettable experience, and you were determined to make the most of every moment.
The hotel room was much nicer than you had expected. The bed was soft and comfortable, warm yellow light spilled from the bedside lamps, and the beach stretched out just beyond your window.
You were sharing the room with Chaewon, but the two of you had already agreed that she would switch rooms with Jake at night. After all, Jake was staying with her boyfriend, Heeseung, and they naturally wanted some time together.
For one, Jake was your best friend.
And for another, you had been hopelessly in love with him for the past three years.
Chaewon had told you countless times that you should just confess. According to her, you were beautiful enough that he’d never reject you, and she insisted she could “tell” that he liked you too.
There were several reasons for that.
The first was obvious, you were terrified.
Jake was your best friend. The thought of risking your friendship for feelings that might not even be returned was enough to keep your mouth shut every time you thought about confessing.
The second reason was much harder to admit.
You genuinely believed he was out of your league.
Jake had always been popular. He was outgoing, confident, and effortlessly attractive. People naturally gravitated toward him wherever he went.
You, on the other hand, seemed to find something new to dislike about yourself every day.
Sometimes it was the slight crook in your nose.
Sometimes it was your stomach.
Other times it was your arms.
And on particularly bad days, it was everything at once.
Jake was the kind of person everyone liked. Most of the school’s most memorable parties had been hosted by him, and somehow even his ridiculously cringeworthy lip-sync videos on TikTok always ended up going viral.
He seemed to shine without even trying.
So no matter how often your friends encouraged you to confess, you had already made up your mind.
You weren’t going to tell Jake about your feelings.
The evening passed by pleasantly.
Your entire class gathered for dinner, sharing stories, playing games, and reminiscing about the years you’d spent together. Laughter echoed throughout the room, and for a moment, it was easy to forget that graduation was only a few weeks away.
Time slipped through your fingers faster than expected, and before you knew it, the clock struck eleven.
“Alright, everyone,” your teacher called out. “Time to head back to your rooms.”
You glanced over at Chaewon and spotted Heeseung pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead before leaning down to whisper something in her ear. The smile that spread across her face made it obvious she was already looking forward to their room swap.
Your gaze drifted elsewhere.
He was sitting beside you, his head resting lazily against one hand.
And suddenly, your heart skipped a beat.
His expression was soft, almost dreamy, the kind of look you had imagined countless times in the little fantasies that played in your head before you fell asleep.
For a moment, you forgot how to breathe.
Jake had the warmest eyes you’d ever seen.
Eyes that somehow always seemed full of affection, even when he wasn’t saying anything at all. You often wondered how anyone could avoid falling for him when he looked at them like that.
“You keep staring at me, Jake.”
A grin tugged at your lips as he immediately blinked and straightened up.
His denial came far too quickly.
He rubbed the back of his neck and looked everywhere except at you, which only made your smile widen.
You shook your head, amused by his reaction, before standing from your seat.
Without waiting for a response, you turned and headed toward your room, completely unaware of the way his eyes followed you the entire way.
You and Chaewon waited until the hotel had fallen completely silent.
The lights in the neighboring rooms had gone out one by one, and the distant chatter that had filled the hallways earlier had long since disappeared. By now, everyone was probably asleep.
Carefully, Chaewon pushed her blanket aside and slipped out of bed.
Luckily, all the rooms shared the same balcony, making it surprisingly easy to move between them without being seen.
She quietly opened the window before turning back to you with a grin.
“Have fun with Jake. I’ll see you tomorrow, y/n.”
Her eyebrows wiggled teasingly before she climbed outside.
You let out a quiet laugh and shook your head.
The curtain remained pulled back after she left, allowing pale moonlight to spill into the room.
You found yourself staring at the bright rectangle of light on the floor as your eyelids gradually grew heavier.
But suddenly a shadow blocked the moonlight.
Jake was standing outside your window.
“Damn, there you are!” you whisper-shouted as you hurried over. “What took you so long? I was starting to think the three of you were all going to sleep in the same room.”
Jake nearly slipped while climbing through the window.
“Whoa. Your mind went somewhere completely different with that one.”
“I didn’t mean it like that! Shut up.”
He laughed as he finally managed to pull himself inside and you quickly closed the window behind him.
“That was a whole workout,” he complained. “Why are these windows so ridiculously high up?”
But you barely heard him.
Your attention had drifted elsewhere.
Jake was wearing a pair of gray sweatpants and an oversized red Spider-Man shirt. His sweatpants hung low on his hips, revealing the waistband of his Calvin Klein boxers.
Your eyes lingered for half a second too long.
“And you’re telling me I’m the one staring?”
Heat rushed to your face as you immediately looked away.
His laughter filled the room.
The two of you spent the next several minutes sitting on the king-size bed, talking about graduation, your classmates, and how strange it felt that this chapter of your lives was slowly ending.
You talked about who you wanted to stay in touch with, who would probably disappear after graduation, and all the memories you’d made together over the years.
Then Jake suddenly sat up straighter.
“We should sneak out,” he repeated. “Think about it. This is the last school trip we’ll ever go on together. Nobody’s going to notice if we’re careful.”
His eyes lit up with excitement as he reached forward and grabbed your wrists.
“Please, y/n. We’ve never done anything rebellious at school.”
You almost burst out laughing.
“Jake, we’ve skipped classes more times than I can count. And don’t even get me started on all those parties we went to before showing up to school hungover the next morning.”
“But still,” he continued quickly. “We’re graduating soon. If we spend this whole year following every rule, we’re going to regret it.”
Honestly, you wanted to go. You really did.
The only thing stopping you was the possibility of getting caught by one of your teachers.
But then Jake looked at you.
And there they were again.
The same look he’d given you earlier.
The one that always made your heart stumble over itself.
You took a slow breath, then nodded.
Jake immediately shot to his feet, a grin spreading across his face.
Before you could stop him, he grabbed your hand and pulled you up with him.
“Careful!” you whispered. “I really don’t want anyone hearing us.”
“If we get caught, I’ll take the blame.”
“Oh, you absolutely will.”
Jake pressed his ear against the door, listening carefully for any movement in the hallway.
After a few seconds, he turned back to you and nodded.
Then, slowly, he pushed the door open. Sneaking out turned out to be much easier than either of you had expected.
The moment you stepped outside the hotel, Jake took off running.
He spun around halfway down the path, jogging backward with his arms stretched toward you.
“Come on! We have to hurry. Someone might look out the window and we’ll be grounded.”
You couldn’t help laughing. His grin was impossible to resist.
Taking his hand, you let him pull you along.
“Jake, slow down! I can’t run as fast as you!”
“We’re already far enough away,” he called over his shoulder. “We’re fine.”
When you finally reached the beach, both of you slowed to a stop.
The ocean stretched endlessly before you, illuminated by silver moonlight. Gentle waves rolled onto the shore, and the water seemed to glow beneath the night sky.
As you admired the view, you felt Jake’s gaze settle on you once again.
“It’s beautiful,” you whispered.
“Yeah,” he replied softly.
Something in his voice made you turn toward him.
For a brief moment, your eyes met.
Then your heart betrayed you, and you quickly looked away, running toward the water.
Behind you, Jake shouted something, but the wind carried his words away.
He caught up within seconds and by the time you reached the shoreline, both of you were breathless.
“Let’s sit down,” Jake suggested, pointing toward a nearby bench.
The two of you settled onto the wooden bench, listening to the waves crash against the shore.
For a while, neither of you spoke.
Not an exhausted sigh but a content one.
He kept his eyes on the ocean.
“You know, moments like this remind me why life is worth living.”
“And honestly… you’re a big part of that.”
Jake swallowed before speaking again.
“I never told you this, but I had a really difficult time this winter. Probably the worst I’ve ever been mentally.”
The smile disappeared from your face.
“But whenever things got bad, I reminded myself that I wasn’t alone.”
His eyes finally met yours.
Emotion tightened your throat.
“I don’t think you realize how much you’ve helped me over the years. The support you’ve given me, the way you’ve always listened…” He laughed softly. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you.”
Tears immediately filled your eyes.
To your surprise, his eyes were glossy too.
“I’m sorry,” he said with a small smile. “That came out of nowhere.”
“You have no idea how much that means to me.”
Without thinking, you reached up and brushed a tear from his cheek.
Jake froze but he slowly leaned into your touch.
The movement made your heart stutter.
His eyes dropped briefly to your lips.
You immediately pulled your hand back.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“No.” his voice barely audible.
Jake took a shaky breath.
“Y/n… stop me if you don’t want this.”
Before you could respond, he leaned forward.
For a moment, the entire world seemed to disappear.
The sound of the waves, the cool breeze… Everything.
The kiss was gentle at first, as though he was afraid you might pull away.
But when you kissed him back, you felt him smile.
His hand found your waist, pulling you slightly closer.
You tangled your fingers in his soft hair, and the warmth of his smile deepened against your lips.
Eventually, Jake pulled away.
His cheeks were bright red and so were yours.
Neither of you could stop smiling.
“I’ve liked you for so long,” he admitted quietly. “It became impossible to pretend I didn’t.”
You stared at him, still trying to process what had just happened.
“I never thought you felt the same way.”
You laughed through your tears.
“I’ve been in love with you for years.”
“I just thought there was no way someone like you could like someone like me back.”
Immediately, Jake reached for your hands.
“Y/n, you’re the most incredible girl I’ve ever met.”
You felt your eyes sting again.
“I’ve never doubted my feelings for you. Not once.”
His thumb brushed gently across your knuckles.
“You’re the best thing that’s happened to me.”
This time, his tears slipped free.
Jake looked at you with so much affection that it almost felt unreal.
Without thinking, you wrapped your arms around his neck.
He immediately pulled you closer.
For several minutes, neither of you moved.
The ocean continued its endless rhythm behind you while moonlight painted everything silver.
It felt like time had stopped.
Eventually, Jake pulled back slightly.
He took both of your hands and smiled nervously.
“I can’t believe I finally get to ask this.”
“Will you be my girlfriend, y/n?”
You laughed through your tears.
The happiest laugh Jake had ever heard.
The relief on his face was immediate.
Jake cupped your cheek and pressed another kiss to your lips.
This one was slower and softer.
Filled with everything neither of you had been brave enough to say for years.
When he pulled away, his forehead rested against yours.
The rest of the night passed in a blur.
You walked along the beach hand in hand, sharing stories, confessions, and all the little things you’d never been brave enough to tell each other before.
Jake admitted that the first thing he’d noticed about you were your eyes.
“I thought you were pretty from the start,” he confessed. “But once I got to know you, I realized your heart was even more beautiful.”
You rolled your eyes at how cheesy he sounded.
Then admitted that you’d originally noticed how effortlessly cool he always looked.
“See?” he laughed. “I knew my outfits were working.”
By the time you finally returned to the hotel, nearly three hours had passed.
Luckily, nobody had noticed you were gone.
Back in the room, Jake wrapped an arm around your waist as the two of you settled into bed.
The excitement of the night slowly faded into comfortable silence.
Just before sleep claimed you, you felt him press a gentle kiss against your temple.
A smile spread across your face.
And for the first time in a long time, falling asleep felt effortless.
