While checking upcoming chapters for Witch, Please!, a thought for an art for one of them popped up. Now we have Allura, with a new variant to her flight suit, and Reylond. And Reylond might be a bit of a cheeky bugger with that look on his face. Actually, how about a small excerpt from an upcoming chapter for context, hmm?

“Now you’re looking like true paladins.” Allura smiled. “Now it’s time to arm you.” She motioned to the weapons before her. “These are bayards, the traditional weapons used by the paladins of Voltron.” “Tradition is a bit of a stretch as there’s actually only been one generation of paladins before you.” Reylond informed. He smiled and hummed when Allura shot him a look.

Out of nowhere when I went to bed, I got the idea that I should draw Reylond in a sleeveless top, looking nice and strong. And I'm not complaining. He turned out great. And a thought struck me. What if tattoos aren't exactly common in Alteans, not like with Earthlings. But leave it to Reylond to have one. And if the symbol looks familiar, I've done that in the past on Pidge for another AU and it's the symbol on the green lion's shield. To be expected since the profile for Reylond points out that he trained under Trigel and even helps Pidge. He might not be a paladin, but he's got green connections.

I was sure I'd be doing others after Pidge's profile, and I'm here with Reylond! Coran's son! We've seen past arts for him and now he has a profile for the Witch, Please! AU. And he now has a full name! I feel like to honour his closest friend, Alfor, Coran would have that as one of Reylond's middle names. More about Reylond that didn't make it to the profile page, he also trains with the other paladins, especially Keith. He'll also drag Keith off of the training deck if he's there too much and needs rest. He's far more calm than his father, but he can definitely keep up and does a lot. And he takes pride in what he knows. Coran may be an encyclopedia, but Reylond knows plenty, too; he probably hopes to one day know as much as his father. Odds are, had the war not happened, he'd have become Allura's right hand and advisor, just as Coran was to Alfor. Now he's finding his place with combat training and even helping Pidge study her magic.

Thoughts of space witch AU have hit my brain at times. As well as thoughts of Reylond being Coran's son (homage to him having Roland/Garrett in GoLion/DotU as his son). And of course, why not have both? And have Reylond be this cool big brother figure who probably helps the paladins learn Altean, especially Pidge, the witch. What better way to help her expand her witchiness than bringing out old Altean alchemy texts and help her study? So, here we have Reylond teaching Pidge and her learning to work with a small Balmeran crystal, turning it green because why not? The crystals are usually blue but Sendak's was purple, potentially corrupted by dark magic from Haggar and/or the Druids, so why not let Pidge find a way to make it green?

So, back in 2020, I designed Reylond, this depiction for a son for Coran. And he was on my mind again because in one discord server, we were talking about how Coran in VLD should have had the son he couldn't have/keep in his life in GoLion/DotU. He should have a son he adores and have a happy life raising him and see him become such a good young man who helps out the team and such. Well, that chatter led me back to 2020 when I first designed him and made me want to redraw him. Originally I was just gonna draw the first picture, but I decided to work with the other two, too. And for Pidge, I decided to go with her space witch au look.

I'm just so happy to see this. From the art changing in all the right ways over time to Coran getting to be this loving happy father. CORAN CORAN THE LOVING FATHERLY MAN!!!!!!!!!

Okay. Let's see. Where do I begin? I wanted A LOT OF STUFF. I wanted to revisit the concept of Reylond, a take for Coran's son that he deserves in VLD. I wanted Larmina as Altean in VLD. I wanted Larmina crushing on nerdy Pidge. And I didn't know what Pidge I wanted and then remembered this Olkari-looking one and thought that'd be so adorable. So. Here we are with all of that. And I am pleased. Whether or not Pidge has noticed, well... I don't think so. She's the dumbest genius around and I love that for her. But Reylond noticed. Also. Reylond being Coran's son (based on the GoLion name of Roland). Also imagining Larmina as Coran's niece instead of Allura's. It's the ginger hair. So, Relond as Larmina's cousin is absolutely perfect and adorable. You can bet he'll tease her.

It's been a while, but I wanted to draw the concept I had for Coran's son, Reylond. And here I am with him. And I'm pleased. Coran deserves to have a son. Especially alive, well, and the two having a positive relationship.

Remember when I did this thing about imagining Coran having a son in VLD? Well, I was going through my posts and I stumbled across him again and was hit with the urge to draw him again. But I was lacking the ideas. Well, I decided to do some screenshot edits. And with some changes.  I was looking at screenshots of Coran to work with and I saw that teenage Coran, that we see in the first episode of season one if I’m correct, had earrings. So, with that in mind, I decided to give the lad some earrings! I think they suit him! 

Also. I had an idea on renaming him. In DotU he was called Garrett and in GoLion he was called Roland. Well, in homage to the DotU version, I had started mentally calling him Reylond (to sound similar-ish to Roland, so... yup...). None of the Altean names, I recall, just weren’t... hitting right. But merging and figuring things out, I had been calling him that mentally for a while now. And I’m liking it.
